I highly recommend the Motorola Jedi series, specifically the MTS-2000 UHF, 48 channel (don't bother with 2 or 16 ch versions). Used/surplus units can be acquired from eBay for under $100 with new a battery and antenna, but you will need to have it programmed by someone with CPS software. It also features a back-lit display on top.

According to the info I have Nacre loads each system with two downlead specs A1 or A2. One being the PRC radio downlead. The other for use with the XTS downlead. Now if you can make an adapter matching the pinout could you use it with any radio? Since I understand the choice of radio applies to type of downlead not what is at the end of it.

the polarity is reversed on certain radio ptt attachments. For example, Kenwood vs Motorolla...so changing the downlead isn't always workable, you need to change the PTT as well.
