+1 I built one back in high school, the 2mm IR LEDs, just like a flashlight shoots a beam of IR light, so if anyone else had one on, you would instantly see the beam and vis versa.

Basically generation 0 tech.

So-called "digital" night vision is as Drake described. The resolution is on par with good Gen 2 devices, but these need a LOT of infrared to see anything. Without it you're just as blind as someone with the naked eye. A huge IR spotlight would assist greatly but makes you a lot more visible, especially to anyone else with any sort of NV device.

I think these new goggles are advantageous to airsoft. Night games can be a lot of fun and VERY few people have the scratch to drop on acceptable NV devices. I had a Gen 2 D-300 monocular at one point and found it lacking, especially for the $1,200 I dropped on it. At the price point this device is marked at, it makes it affordable to most any airsofter and opens up the possibility of far more night games. Who cares if the built-in illuminator is only good to 20 feet? An IR filter for a flashlight can be bought or made with a piece of exposed photographic film. Bring these on and get out there in the dark, I say!

Thats not even night vision, its an IR camera, same idea but with ALOT more IR illumination lol
It's the old 1950's starlight!
Anyway moral of the story is anyone with a gen1 tube is gonna see you no matter where you are, best chance is to blind them with your many IR lights lol

Kingsix September 26th, 2008 07:33

Hmmm won't be to invisible if someone has an IR Detector built for catching these devices seriously I've seen them for sale at a electronics surplus store.

This will be popular at Star Trek conventions.

It looks like some sort of weird pilot helmet from Star Wars. Like some Tie Interceptor or Advanced pilot should be shooting down X-Wings wearing these things....too bulky.

If you're serious.... http://www.opticsplanet.net/nightvision3rd.html

Far as I know US state dept won't issue any export permits for these. You'll have to get them from the UK or get ones built in Canada.

All it does is allow you to see infared and has a giant infared flashlight on it.

You can get the same effect using infared LEDs and a camcorder viewfinder (I.E. Paris hilton night vision).

I had to sell my nightvision goggles for car insurance.

RICKBO September 26th, 2008 18:31

Saw one of these at walmart today...
