There's more context that is being left out; the fact that they were fighting. I'm not saying that this is a good or usual way to act in an arguement, but angry people can do really screwed up and stupid things.

And the mother was shot in the face too, lucky she wasnt hit in the eye. The little bastard could have really hurt her.
