What nobody has seemed to mention is the OTHER role (and what I believe is the most important role). Recon. Effective snipers, in real life, play a huge role in relaying enemy positions. More often than not, they never take a shot. Being able to provide intel as to troop formations is more important to the overall mission than taking that one shot which will mean you have possibly exposed yourself. Airsoft snipers should be even less inclined to take a shot since most AEGs can near the range of a sniper rifle.

Having played the sniper role myself (with an SR25), I can honestly say that I have only taken out ONE target that was worth exposing myself to. I remained undetected even though I took out more enemies, but I think that once the enemy knows theres a sniper out there, they hunt you down. I was more valuable to my team being able to stay undetected and relaying what the enemy was doing.

It's not the glamourous role that it appears to be, but it is a very important job that if done right, can hugely benefit your team.

This is bang on target for me as well,, well said... But I think that all the new players should have the same mentality coming into the sport, even if they are a rifleman etc.

If you know the disadvantages then you know there are no "real" advantages to using a "sniper rifle" in airsoft. Other then the "kooler than thou" factor.

The novel idea that when you look at people through your scope, you can touch yourself in an awkward manner and then later on you can tell that person that you were touching yourself in an awkward manner while watching them. Did I mention you save a lot of BBs?
