Tm Desert Warrior 4.3 tactical purchased from Stryak.

the orignal owner (the guy stryak got it from) did a really crappy paint job to cover the blaze orange tip, looks like it was done with DE nail polish

my m4 and masada are black on tan 2 tone already so i figured i would do the same with the sidearm, so i stripped and painted the slide, and painted the pistol grips

Got a few more parts from Illusion today. After some issues fiddling with the hop up, I got the parts in. Sadly, the spring cap thing doesn't stick out all the way because of the barrel bushing, but it looks nice regardless. Oddly, a tiny square about the size of an eraser scrap fell out of the frame when I was putting the slide back together. I can't figure out where it goes, but everything seems to work...

ILLusion December 15th, 2011 23:10

You picked the Caspian bushing, which is the thickest one. I thought you did that on purpose... some people like the look of it, as it insets the outer barrel, or gives it a flush mount (depending on the barrel).

If you want it flush with the spring plug, you'll need either a Government style bushing or the Series 70 style.

In any case, it looks good. :D Don't know what that little square bit is... if you take a picture of it, I might be able to identify it.

RacingManiac December 15th, 2011 23:41

I think the thick bushing works better with a full length guide rod....the guide rod bushing usually is longer and looks more flush...at least AFAIK no one makes the flush fitting plug for airsoft.....

I'll get a pic of it. I think it has something to do with the safety, since that came off when I was getting the slide back on. The new Nova extended stop makes it hard to put the slide back on properly if I don't unscrew the grips.

How do you guys feel about Nova safeties? I think I might change that next.

I have the same slide release you do, and the same problem. Best solution is just to have a swiss army knife on you if you're worried about having to strip it in the field. Unscrewing the grips sounds like a much longer process! The little pin hidden inside the left side grip panel is what you're having trouble with, right?

You got it. I resorted to twisting a paperclip and nudging the little pin, but that's a chore all by itself.

Edit: How greased do you guys keep the hop up rubber? I practically degreased mine because I was handling it so much when I put in the inner barrel.

Ah, sounds like it's the piece that connects the left side safety to the right side safety. Without it, one side will move, while the other doesn't.

All Nova slide catches do this. It's missing a machined ramp that allows easier installation/removal of the slide catch. Look at the area that contacts the plunger on the Marui safety lever and compare it to the Nova. Hit that same spot with a Dremel side drill or file to mimic the feature. I have to do this to all Nova slide stops I install.

They're more durable (handle wear better), and they're a bit heavier. Slightly stiffer as well, but otherwise, mostly cosmetic.

Not greased at all.

RacingManiac December 16th, 2011 15:34

Hop-up should be dry....

FYI you can modify the slide release to make it "tool-less":
http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/image/120865551
http://www.pbase.com/racingmaniac/image/120865553

Its relatively soft steel and I just file it with a needle file...you just need to make a lead-in for the pin so it pushes the plunger back as you push it in...

Most gas guns work the same (if not all)
The only difference you have to keep in mind is the aftermarket support.

Other than that, it's just the style. Go with what you want.

Now my question: Do 1911 Mags work in a Hi-Capa or vice-versa?

Nope. A 1911 uses single stack magazines where as a Hi-capa uses double stack magazines.

Freeze December 21st, 2011 13:10

So a 1911 Mag is thinner?

DAMN. Those grips are sex.

ILLusion January 11th, 2012 01:10

Yeah, I still love the Gunner Grips. Sadly, the original style is no longer available. No idea why they'd changed the style to begin with. It still looks good, but I find the grip to be much "sharper" to the touch. All's good if you're wearing gloves, though.

TaroBear January 11th, 2012 01:12

Did those fit on with the grip weights?

Now my gun looks like a cheap copy of your creation. Damn. :D Guess I'll just have to take it to the next level.

They're real steel grip panels. No hollow exists for the grip weights.

Here's the original:

http://www.pbase.com/illusive_airsoft/kimberwarrior

Still one of my favorite pistols, and she's been getting a lot of use lately.

TaroBear January 11th, 2012 01:19

How do you compensate for the gun being unbalanced without the grip weights? i've resorted to sanding mine down.

ILLusion January 11th, 2012 02:22

Once the magazine is inserted, the weight will greatly shift to the grip.

Personally, my ideal pistol balance will have a fulcrum right underneath the trigger. Many real steel pistols are like this

Airsoft pistols with the grip weight installed become heavily grip weighted - even without a magazine inserted. The muzzle becomes much more pointable like this, but the muzzle will have severe jump when you shoot.

Wantabe_Warrior January 11th, 2012 11:56

On the note of gunner grips, I think I might of found something identical to them on VZ grips. Simonich Gunner Grips there called, bottom of the 1911 grips page, personally like the looks of the Operator IIs. They're out of the USA and only via UPS, so $65 (american) grips, $38 (american) for shipping, and dealing with the border.

ILLusion January 11th, 2012 15:12

Simonich Knives has been the official distributor of Gunner Grips for at least 5 years now. They've actually stopped distributing them as of early 2011, and the only Gunner Grips available on the market are of a different production design. The material even feels different.

Note how the indent "pockets" look between the two versions:

Original:
http://www.pbase.com/illusive_airsof...0/original.jpg

New:
http://vzgrips.com/img/Grip%20Pics/G...un-tan-2_L.jpg

The old ones were rounder, and more oval shaped. The new ones are more of a cross checked diamond pattern. This results in very sharp peaks that, while was more tactile, I personally don't like the feel of.

I'd originally purchased mine directly from Simonich here: http://www.simonichknives.com/gunner.htm

However, all purchasing info now directs the buyer to VZ. When I'd contacted the sales reps early last year, they'd also turned me over to VZ, and said that the transition was new at the time.

I ended up buying a pair from TADGear (who no longer carries them), and they were the original style.

If you keep your eyes peeled, used original ones (or even sometimes unused ones) will pop up from time to time on gun forums (and even sometimes airsoft forums.)

So I have a hunch that the slide lock is also not compatible.

That loose front sights might be a common problem with these Shooter's Design slides. I have the same one and neither the stock TM sights or my Dytac sights snugly fit in there. Superglue solved the problem but made it a semi-permanent addition.

Thanks for the "insightful" information ;)
I've got some Dytac sights coming soon so I'll go try and find my superglue.
At the moment the KJW front sight is shimmed with some thin plastic strips . Without the shims it basically falls off.

I picked one up as well. Gee willikers are they an awesome little gun. EDIT: Really straight shooter and completely TM compatible. The only things I can foresee me replacing is the ambi safety (right hand side wobble... and I hate ambi safety), and the sear set, even then, only if something acts up, as of right now, it's pretty perfect.

It's basically the KP-07 MEU with some cosmetic changes and new trademarks.
Great that they're TM compatible. Really nice guns.

if i may leave some input here. i jus bought the les bear model also from evike. mag barely works right out of the box with propane. barely gets 10rds out.
front sight fell off and is lost. mag release gets stuck sometimes.
came with 2 sets of grips. evike deleted my review 2x ;(

so aprt from that. has anyone tried different sights on that same gun?
any RS version sights? are they dovetail sights?
the grips i see for my (co2 version) have rounded indents on the bottom inside.
so normal grips woudl have to be sanded down and shaved to have a cylendr shape in them to fit.

Warped wood grips

Does anyone have any experience un-warping wood grips?
I picked up some Shooters Design Springfield Armory grips for one of my projects, but one of them is warped at the bottom and won't sit flush with the frame.

I steamed mine, had the same problem I screwed them on while they were still plyable and no that they have dried out problem seems to be fixed.

Thanks Racing!
It's a KJW MEU with a Shooters Design MEU late model slide and wood grips (stripped and re-stained). Nova barrel bushing and a Nine Ball full length recoil rod.
Still waiting for my new Nowlin barrel to come in the mail.
