ARMY Kimber Warrior.
Haven't decided on whether or not to refinish it yet.
KJW MEU mags are slightly too large and do not fit. Overall fit & finish aren't too bad. I haven't put any bbs through it yet, but once my new hop up rubber arrives I'll see how it shoots (pull the trigger??:D)

With KJW also being a TM clone, it goes to show how each company's tolerances are a little bit different.

Interesting. I didn't know VZ bought out the Gunner Grips product. Glad to see they're back on the market. I guess this explains why the design looks slightly different from the original Simonich version.

Yeah, they say specifically on some sites that the VZ design is slightly off from the original...I wanted Strike Industries grips with the golfball pattern, but they didn't ship to Canada, so I went with VZs instead.

New Nova LDC kit

4 Attachment(s)
Alright guys! sorry for the bad pics!

But here is the new nova kit long dust cover springfield armory version!

I realize it is missing the mag catch, but it seems to be having some fitment issues that i hope my new nova mag catch will solve!

Anyway. I built this gone from a night warrior and i hate the night warrior grips. These are a set of grips i have from my other springfield armory pistol but id really like to spice this baby up a bit!

I know racingmaniac had some nice carbon fibre grips.. are those weighted?
I would like to get a set that has the weights

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Alex

I just got this back from Dave at Imperial Engravers! :D Fantastic...although if I knew the YAG was going to turn out like that, I would have went for the CNC :( OH WELL, should have asked first. It's a KWA M1911 MK I, had to get it stripped first and powder coated again. Came out a lot thicker so I had to sand the internals to get things to fit properly. The sand blasting must have caused a bubble to form on the grip, so you might see a little lump, which also resulted a lump forming in the inside as well. Took a long time to sand it down so the mags will go in. None the less, amazing job :D

The bubble could not have been formed by the stripping process. In my experience with this stuff (and with Dave's process), it was likely caused during the heating process of the re-colouring, after the powder coat was applied.

There was probably a bubble within the cast itself. When heated, the bubble expanded.

I once had Dave re-colour a cast frame for me, and the front end of it practically melted during the oven phase. :P

turok_t June 26th, 2013 12:13

Hey Cav, yeah the powder coating they use is very thick like an orange peel which looks a bit ugly in my opinion. If you want that nice steel/harden look use duracoat or cerakot.. This is what I did with mine :

Picked up a KJW 1911 last month. Got some Gator grip on the frame and slide, big improvement in index points, we'll see how it holds up to a holster.

Great gun, by the way, uses the same "new" co2 system as the Les Baer customs they came out with. I might replace the sears later to remove the nearly 1cm of deadspace in the trigger before it fires. Kicks like a mule with Propane.

cav. July 1st, 2013 09:43

Oh, true that. Forgot about the paint needing to be heated to dry haha. OH WELL, the insides fixed, just the outside I'll leave alone.

@turok: The orange peel effect isnt half bad on the pistol. But if it was on a lower receiver for a rifle, I would definitely use duracoat instead of the powder coat.

That trigger slack can be taken up by either swapping out to an adjustable trigger stirrup, or the super-cheap way is to add material to the front of the trigger stirrup. I've used tape as a shim in the past. Some people will glue a cut down BB there - whatever works best for you. Keep in mind, that with these cheaper methods, adjustment is a real pain in the ass, as you'll have to completely strip down the gun each time you need to make an adjustment. The adjustable stirrup is the easiest way.

Will do. Great advice.

jordan7831 July 2nd, 2013 17:08

I would also like to ad that I have found cutting a piece of an old credit card often is almost perfect for taking up most of the slack in hi capas. The thickness of the credit card is often just right for many of the WE and KJWs I have owned over the years.

So I stripped the gun down last week, and I didn't see where I could put the card to take up the slack.

On the other hand, I cleaned all the sears and relubed with super lube, the gun is a LOT less mushy in the trigger and has two clear points of trigger movement. Which is a lot better in my opinion, but I would prefer a lot less movement from first and second pressure.

EDIT: upon thinking about it some more, are you suggesting here? http://imgur.com/9X5c61l.jpeg

jordan7831 July 12th, 2013 16:33

I usually shim up the trigger by putting a small piece of credit card on the trigger stirrup.
If you are holding your trigger stirrup and trigger in hand.
http://m0.i.pbase.com/o3/19/177719/1...6CG.AR1419.jpg
The point where the stirrup begins to curve is where I ad my shim. Ideally, the card goes right before the stirrup bends, and touches the inside of the front of the frame, which takes up some of the slack. However, it would be best to get an adjustable stirrup if possible.

Yes, that's exactly it.

The photo you're showing is of one of the ILLusion Kinetics adjustable stirrups. You'll notice a section that looks like it's cut in to a thin arm. In these stainless steel stirrups, you can actually bend that arm outwards as required. The good thing about this, is that you can do all the adjustments you need, without having to take the gun apart.

When I'm doing the "ghetto method" of just gluing material on, I try to measure the length of slack that needs to be taken up, then I find a material that matches that thickness to glue to the front of the stirrup. In my experience, going a little bit smaller than your measurement is better than going larger. This just saves you time from having to continuously take the gun apart and reassemble it as you dial in the sizing.

My 1911 as of currently. Dropped the silverballer look since I didn't like it. Went with more of a two-tone look, but still love the American Legend grips. As a tip to anyone who decides to get those, loctite the screws in the medallions. One fell out during a game, had to contact Pachmayr to get a replacement. Built off a silver WE 1911.

Upgrades so far:

- 6.03 Madbull Tightbore
- Madbull Thread Adapter
- Nineball Dyna Piston Head
- A+ Hop-Up Sleeve
- Shooter's Design Steel Kimber Slide
- Nova Stainless Trigger
- Nova Steel Slide Catch
- Nova Steel Hammer + Innards

- Pachmayr American Legend Grips
- Madbull .45 Whisper Suppressor (85mm)
- Madbull Gemtech Blackside .45 Suppressor (155mm)
- WE Stock Silver Frame, Buffed + Polished

Still working on picking up a Nova steel thumb and palm safety. No intention to replace the housing as it matches the frame, and I don't intend on replacing the stock frame. Probably just going to sand off the original black off the plunger tube and repaint it matte black since I can't seem to find a black steel replacement for it.

Thats a very nice build. I especially like how the parts on that gun cost twice as much as the base WE its built on.

Seeing as I woke up early (thanks kitty), I sanded the sides of the slide this morning . Why the heck not?
I had the sand paper wrapped around a piece of hard flat plastic to make sure that only the sides were sanded.
(mounting a light did scratch the engine enamel off the rail)

That is one sexy 1911, personally I would leave it 2 tone, don't cover that sexy lower leave it naked.
Now I want another 1911.

ARC-74 February 5th, 2014 23:17

Thanks guys:)
Polished alloy frames discolor way faster then slides which is why I was going to paint it.
The reverse two tone is growing on me though, maybe I'll try some Stainless DuraCoat, still be two tone and will not discolor.
Might even do my Kimber in that too, it's frame discolored in just a few days from handling.
Before it started to turn grey it looked like this.
http://airsoftcanada.com/picture.php...pictureid=6171
The front strap and right side near the safety and now dingy dull grey with a hint of a finger/palm print pattern.

Turok, sexy kit.
How is yours for rust, my friend just got a Hurricane Kimber Kit-- the black LAPD SWAT version and his was rusty-- barrel, chamber, recoil spring, basically everything had rust issues.

ILLusion February 26th, 2014 16:19

I've seen a number of rust issues with the Hurricane kits. The slide guide and the slide stop are the most notorious pieces that I've seen. Clean off existing rust with some WD-40, clean off any residual WD-40, and coat it with silicone oil to prevent (reduce) it from happening in the future.

redneck12 February 26th, 2014 17:18

That's what he is doing, just sucks when you are shelling out a pretty penny for a higher end kit and you get it and its all rusty. I know they are coming over by boat and you have all the temp/humidity changes, salt water mists etc, but I think for the cost of the kit they could have better packaging. A quick Youtube search revealed rusted kits is a common problem with Hurricane doesn't seem to matter where you buy it.

ILLusion February 26th, 2014 17:33

LOL @ "higher end kit".

Sorry to say, but the Hurricane kits are actually one of the LOWEST end kits available. Once you take out all of the extra bits and bobs that the kit comes with, they're the cheapest kits around.

I would prefer a Guarder kit over Hurricane kits, too bad Hurricane is doing a lot of the really cool Kimber kits.

redneck12 February 26th, 2014 18:06

This was the first Hurricane kit I have seen in person. I always assumed they were higher end due to the price tag and rarer kits available. But Illusion you are the man when it comes to 1911's so you say its crap I'll take your word. I have always used Guarder parts for my builds and have been happy with the results after a little elbow grease. I know I won't be shelling out for a Hurricane kit any time soon if I'm paying for a rusty kit.

1911 kits are very expensive, due to the complication required to manufacture them. If you thought a Hurricane kit was expensive, then you haven't seen the price tag on some of the actual high end kits... they might make your head explode. LOL. The price of one of those kits alone, would cost more than a real gun.

redneck12 February 26th, 2014 18:48

Lol I don't doubt it, I have drooled over plenty of pics of your builds and other really nice builds, but unless I win the lottery they are out of my reach for now. But I do appreciate the work that goes into those builds just like building their RS counter parts by hand one at a time.

I think I just cried a bit :( Didn't you just build me a hurricane kit? LOL. I was under the impression that the hurricane kits once fully worked on and tweaked by a doc, were a better kit than the guarder.

either way, hurricane was the only one with the kimber kit I wanted as you mentioned already.

Anything build by a good quality installer will become a quality build. It's getting to that point, that's where installers can appreciate the build quality. A Nova kit, even at a staggering $700 price tag, can be slapped together in less than 20 minutes.

A Hurricane kit, on the other hand, requires hours of fitment work. Your build, took me almost 6 hours for just the actual kit installation, plus almost 10 hours of testing, and trialing different configurations for you, and countless hours of consultation.

Just because the kit itself is garbage, doesn't mean the build you'll get is garbage. As long as it's built well, and runs, then nobody really cares how much work went into it, except for the installer (me, in this case.)

Like I said previously, Hurricane kits are expensive, because you're paying for a lot of other little bits and bobs that come with the kit that other kits might not come with. Once you deduct the value of all those extra parts, the value of the frame and the slide themselves (which makes up the core of the kit), the value of those two parts would be less than a Guarder kit. People buy Hurricane kits, not because they're easy to install (they certainly aren't), but because they make very unique conversion kits. If what you wanted was a Kimber Custom Covert II, that's what you got, and it's a well built one. It's die cast aluminum though, and if you wanted one that's CNC machined from billet stock, then your only other option is to buy a real Kimber, unfortunately... that, or machine your own kit by hand.

Just realize, that at the end of the day, it's still just a die cast aluminum kit, just like Guarder's is. Realize the limitations of die cast aluminum. It's not as durable, and fitment isn't as precise (due to the casting process). If it's installed well, it should be free of major wobble, play, and rattle... but due to the soft nature of die cast aluminum, as you use the gun a lot, play will develop. Much like a real gun, but it happens faster with die cast aluminum, despite the lesser forces that airsoft guns endure.

Poorly installed kits will have tons of material filed off just to get parts to slide without friction, and that's probably the worst way to do it, because you end up with slide to frame fitment and/or barrel to slide fitment that makes the gun sound like a maraca from all the slop and wobbling in it.

Hurricane seems to be working from much looser tolerances, or just using crappier molds, so of any manufacturer I've ever had to work with, Hurricane has already required the most amount of work. I'm kind of glad they're hard to find these days. They're a huge time waster for me, but it doesn't mean I'll be lazy with the build. Don't worry, you're going to get a good gun. You and at least a few dozen people on ASC that I've built Hurricane guns for can attest to this. A lot of them have even gone on to 3rd and 4th owners who say their gun built by me is still performing extremely well. Your build was actually the last Hurricane build I'd offered with free installation. Since then, I've tacked on a $300 labor charge to install Hurricane kits. They simply require WAY too much time to get them installed well.

I've seen a lot of them simply slapped together by other installers, and they were chock full of problems. The biggest problem without re-working the entire kit from the gut out, is extremely poor gas consumption. Some of them, I've seen them get only 8 shots out of a full mag of gas. And then there are other installers who alleviate that problem by doing what I mentioned above... filing the crap out of everything so that it's so loose, there's zero friction everywhere, but also no components are really holding well to each other and causes the entire thing to shake and rattle more than a belly dancer on meth.

jamex February 26th, 2014 20:38

Appreciate the clarity as always :) I'll offer my own by saying I never doubted I would be receiving anything but an awesome build. I have no regrets whatsoever and appreciate every second of your time and every drop of sweat that went into it. I can certainly appreciate your evaluation of the various kits on the market and which are tougher to turn a profit on due to the work involved. By no means was I criticizing your dedication to the project.

...was mostly poking fun. :D

apilar February 26th, 2014 20:42

Just figured id throw in my experiences with the hurricane kit.

I have heard of many stories with the rust and strange fitment issues, regarding extremely warped barrels and so on.

On the positive side of things I had great success with my hurricane covert II kit. Went together fairly smooth and a bit of fitting here and there as expected and all around im very impressed.

I actually have to say that the slide play on my hurricane is better than my two nova kits. For a bit of back story, both my nova kits and hurricane kit went onto brand new tm 1911 slide rails, each fit with no filing on the slide rail areas and the nova ones seem to rattle more even with the inclusion of slide spacers and that little slide bar in stock 1911's (TM) that are removed? or added? for use on a 5.1 rail system.

Taking off the material is always easy but adding it has me a bit stumped... id really prefer over sized everything rather than under. I suppose it makes it easier for companies to sell 'drop fit' kits rather than ones that need a little extra work so it appeals to more people.

Any way, here is a bit of eye candy for my Nova v12 kit that is almost built!

Sorry about the less than extraordinary photos

Based on my experience, Prime/Nova 1911 kits were the best, little modifications, fitted perfectly with no wobble. I didn't really want to get the Hurricane Kit, but its the only company that manufactures this style. Either way, not going to use any of the controls, springs, etc. Gonna use nova mag catch, slide catch, safety, beaver tail, hammer etc. You can see that Nova 1911 kits are much higher quality, here is LA Vickers i recently acquired, you can see the difference compared with hurricane kits:
