is it leagal to use my airsoft gun at my cottage

I'm brand new to air soft and I'm Canadian. i am getting a crappy pistol for my b-day i was wondering if it is legal to use it at my cottage (1.6 acres approximate).
I was also wondering if it is legal to paint it ? (part of the body is clear)
please i really need some help with this

M.Garcia June 23rd, 2010 16:31

If your playing on your property which is isolated from others I don't see what the harm would be. Just be very wary.

Yes you can paint it whatever colour you want. I'd recommend bright pink.

ouyin2000 June 23rd, 2010 16:43

I feel that this would come down to more of a "what they don't know can't hurt them" aspect, as opposed to an actual Legal/Illegal aspect. As long as you're not brandishing it in open view of someone who doesn't know what it exactly is, then it's okay.

Like was stated, on your own property, out of the public's eye, and where everyone around knows what you're doing; then by all means have at'er.

TokyoSeven June 23rd, 2010 16:47

Just be smart, use common sense and discretion. If your up in the middle of nowhere and noone can see you then its no harm to fire off a couple rounds and plink off come cans or pie tins. However if your cabin is clearly visible from roadways and walking paths then perhaps its not the greatest idea since people dont always know what airsoft is and can often mistake an airsoft gun for a real gun, especially if you plan to paint it.

well i was hoping to use it down by my lake front but i guess ill have to use it in a more forested area

thanks guys

ill ask my neighbours before using it

considering one of my neighbours shoots chipmunks with a real rifle i think it will be ok!
its actually true

Rooster June 23rd, 2010 16:55

That would be the best idea, let your closest cottage neighbors know that it's not a real pistol, just so they won't get jumpy and call the cops.

Scarecrow June 23rd, 2010 17:32

First question - how old are you and where do you live? Then I'll advise you.

Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw June 23rd, 2010 17:37

Make sure you check with the local bylaws regarding discharging of firearms as some municipalities also include air guns and airsoft guns in that whole mix.

Eye protection is key. Remember to wear some form of eye safety protection.

He's shooting at pop cans, or trees, utilizing a CT Pistol (presumably). I highly doubt that a ricochet from a .12gram BB fired from one of those will even break skin, let alone chip a tooth or getting a BB stuck in the lip.

Anyhow, use eye protection, and be safe as possible.

Use Bio-BBs!!!! Protect your environment, I'm sure the locals would appreciate it.

Or better yet. Good firearms discipline and don't discharge it while pointing it at your face. He's intending on plinking with it.

Better yet, Set up a catch system by draping a towel / Sheet behind your target area and collect your spent rounds and dispose of them properly.

Provided he can hit that sheet or towel :D I heard crappy tire guns are so accurate, you can shoot the asshole out of a sparrow from 100m away.

Ive fired the CT version of the Taurus 24/7. It was certianly not a target pistol but the rounds do go where you aim them with reasonable accuracy (about a 2 foot variance at 20 feet). And it usually is a good idea to put up a back catch when doing target practice in an uncontrolled environment to mitigate the chance of hitting something you don't want too. Again its highly unlikely but building good discipline is always a good thing.

I alos have a cottage, about 1.5 acres that we play on a lot. All the advice on this thread is really good. the other thing you might want to consider is to play in the off season when there aren't as many neighbors on the lake and the bugs are better. We tend to play in early April before the bugs are out and after labour day. Far less worries about neighbors or sightseers coming down the road during this time period but the weather is still nice enough to play. But number one rule respect your neighbors and their property, the cops will only show up if called so be nice. Try to play as far away from the road as possible(which is tough on only 1.5 acres) but if vehicles/walkers do come, just like road hockey when you were a kid call it and everybody stops playing until the vehicle/people have passed. A smile and a wave usually helps too and if they stop to ask explain what you are doing cheerfully.

"It's paintball only without the mess" is a line that always works for me. People automatically associate paintball with harmless fun(it just seems to have better PR)

One last thing...if you do play a lot during high summer season I guarantee you that one day the cops will show up(there is always that one PC Leftie asshole on the lake who thinks you are a budding terroist threat). When that happens exercise strict safety disciplne, be courteous, respectful and obedient, chances are they will just warn you as cottage country cops in most cases are a little more laid back than city cops.

Go to BB Bastard's websight, Scarecrow's got a good PDF on rules and safety for airsoft.

because he was responsible enough to ask, most kids would have just done it and potentially caused and issue, at least now he knows where he stands, and has some tips on to keep this out of the newspaper as another airsoft related issue.

I may have missed it when I read through, but buying/selling aside, I didn't actually see a rule against helping under 18s with questions about airsoft?
