Best V2 mechbox?

I need help choosing a great (not good, great) drop-in gearbox. If you post anything, please don't be bias (I want the best, this is for my ONLY AEG),and please leave a link to the site for the gearbox.

I was think this gearbox.

thanks in advance.

That would be a decent choice, yes.

m102404 May 9th, 2011 20:34

I've got one running right now. Everything in it was quite decent. I swapped out the stock piston for my own reason (it's kind of a silly build).

Shimming was pretty decent, parts/fit/function looked ok. I overheated everything (:)) and one of the wires needed resoldering.

Personally...I'd buy another (and was about to if this build blew through these gears...which it did to 3 other gear sets...but it hasn't done anything to this KA mechbox so far).

Akhéron Sombre May 9th, 2011 20:38

For me, Systema is the best one. You won't regret.

cellulose May 9th, 2011 20:51

If you want to buy all the parts and put it together yourself the Modify stuff is awesome. It will cost about $340 with the modular gears and about $310 with the regular gears but you'll have a solid gearbox when you're done.

Wantabe_Warrior May 9th, 2011 20:55

Thanks for the input guys. Is the front wired one the same quality? should I upgrade/replace any of the parts out of the box?

aBseNtcell: I'd rather not build it myself (now) because my rifle is broken currently.

It's also good to know that due to the reinforcement bars molded onto Modify Torus shells, it won't fit into some metal bodies.

Styrak May 9th, 2011 21:07

The only difference in a front wired one is the wire location.

ThunderCactus May 10th, 2011 03:25

I'd say systema over king arms. They also use 3mm hex screws which are REALLY hard to strip.

Wantabe_Warrior May 10th, 2011 13:11

Cactus mind posting/sending me a link to where you'd get yours?

m102404 May 10th, 2011 13:21

The only thing with systema mechboxes is that my wallet screams after buying one. They are usually (consistently) well built. Guys have mixed impressions about their pistons sometimes. I don't know if they're really "good value" at about twice the price of some of the others. Worth an extra $40-50? Sure. Worth an extra $100-200? Not for me.

They do work well and are well built though

ThunderCactus May 10th, 2011 13:30

Well I personally wouldn't buy one, I build all my boxes from scratch with prometheus parts lol
Try ehobby or redwolf

HKGhost May 10th, 2011 13:35

I find System to be over priced and not worth the $200-$300. They are assembled very well but their parts I don't find them that good. The assembly is probably one of the best pre-built complete gearboxes out there, other than a custom one. I completely agree with Skladfin about Modify's gearboxes. They aren't complete gearboxes but if you build it yourself, you'll have one hell of a gearbox. I built an 8mm Torus gearbox with all Modify parts about 2 years ago, and I never had a problem or worry about it. Be prepared to drop about ~$350 for it.

Crunchmeister May 10th, 2011 14:50

I wouldn't personally buy the Systema. IMO they're really overpriced, and I've seen enough Systems pistons and tappet plates break after short use that I won't pay that kind of money for something that will need work shortly thereafter. I've put a lot of Systema parts in my guns, and more often than not, much cheaper parts ended up being more durable. Although I will say their mechbox shells, gears, and piston / cylinder heads are fine.

King Arms should do you well if you're looking for a preassembled unit that you won't have to mess with for a while. If building from scratch, I'd recommend Modify or Prometheus.

cellulose May 10th, 2011 14:59

In regards to the fit of the Modify gearbox, I have only tried it in Classic Army and MadBull bodies but it fits awesome in both of them.

Wantabe_Warrior May 10th, 2011 15:32

OK, thanks guys. I'll get the King Arms one now and look at built-up one after I finally get to game with my rifle for the first time.

THe_Silencer May 10th, 2011 17:12

THe BEST gearbox shell is the Haynes CNC gearbox, or so I'm told. They're practically impossible to find nowadays though and quite expensive but a properly CNC gearbox should be significantly stronger than normal cast ones.

Dynamo May 10th, 2011 18:23

hands down, ProWin 8mm split gear box if you can find one.
have mine now for close to 7 years, damn thing is bomb proof.
nothing beats being able to work on the gears and not have to worry about the spring and vise-versa. quick spring swap is just awesome. i would say this gearbox is what ICS should have been.

Azathoth May 10th, 2011 21:23

If you want a complete gearbox, None of them are "the best". Each brand of complete box has a set of problems.

Systema: Bad piston, Price
G&P: bad piston,
King arms: bad gearbox shell, bad shimming, bad wiring
Deep fire: Overpriced, bad piston, bad shimming
Jing Gong: Like playing the lotto, usually awful grease
KWA: Bad cylinder head, shimming hit/miss

If you want Gearbox shells:
8mm Prowin that has been discontinued for god knows how long
Haynes CNC - impossible to find you're looking at 400 dollars

I like the KWA gearbox shell simply because the style of spring guide and how it sits in the box, and they are not reinforced in the wrong places.

"CNC" gearboxes are hit and miss sometimes you'll get one that are decent and other times the axle placement on the shell is going to be off, or some other deficiency. I scratch build my gearboxes with parts that I want to experiment with. For a novice drop in solution buy any of the above complete boxes and be prepared for the 'problem' part in them.

ThunderCactus May 11th, 2011 03:17

Partially disagree on the G&P, they're pistons aren't bad, they're just all over the place lol
Older (4 years back) G&P pistons were total crap.
Newer models from 3years ago and up are at least decent. However I've seen them last anywhere from half a season, to 3 YEARS of heavy abuse (200,000+ rounds with 380fps spring) without stripping and zero maintenance.
Same goes for their gears.
Honestly when it comes to G&P I'd say their gear shafts are the weakest link by a wide margin. I always see spur gear shafts break before pistons strip.

Schoolboy May 11th, 2011 03:53

honestly i would have to say custom built gearbox's to your personal preference. I can't stand stock guns i always dive bomb into mine and build them to my liking.

Wantabe_Warrior May 11th, 2011 20:35

I thank you for all your input, and I thinking of starting a super/custom gearbox using some donor parts from my SRC gen.3 pro stock gearbox. And to people talking the best shells 1) I'm not adept at airsoft internals and I don't have a gun that I can practice on, 2) I need a rifle ASAP. Thanks again(, again...)

Azathoth May 12th, 2011 12:58

Be very careful about going the "super/custom" route. Some gearbox shells are just not compatible with other brand components. Buying a specific brand drop in gearbox can do the same thing IE the torus not fitting into some metal bodies and having the axle spacing slightly different to accommodate their modular gearset.

It's not as easy as it sounds to just buy the absolute best that money can buy and cram it all in together, their can be some severe problems.
