New Gearbox.
I am in need of a new Gearbox but I can't decide between 2 of them. Would like feedback on which one is the best buy.
#1 : http://www.ventureairsoft.ca/item.ph...92766af1456d60 #2 : http://www.airsoftparts.ca/store2/in...oducts_id=2332 Is the Modify one worth the extra 80$ or will the G&P but plenty enough? I know G&P guns are good but I think it's external wise... Anyways, some imput would be appreciated :) |
Get the Modify one. The shell is much better and the gear axle are no comparison. I've ran my Torus at 500 fps for a long time with no mods and never had an issue. G&P shells are reinforced on areas that doesn't need it, and areas that requires it, is left. G&P gear axle are prone to snapping and their bearings are shit (IMO). I'd take a KA gearbox over the G&P one.
Fucking auto correct. |
IMO the modify is a bit overpriced. Sure their innards are great and all but I'd think the gearbox is only really worth like 180-190 at least that's my opinion.
However if it were a toss up between those two I'd probably go for the modify TBH (and I own a G&P). After a gearset swapout on the G&P though you're pretty much good to go (I highly recommend the Element helical torque sets, cheap and pretty decent; at least better than stock G&P), not much to say about the bearings, but they seem decent enough in my opinion but then again I don't know too much about bearings and what makes them good or bad. |

:D Kidding aside... I haven't tried the Modify gearbox yet but I have used nearly every other Modify part inside of that gearbox. The gears, the ARL, the piston, the spring, the cylinder, the double o-ring cylinder head (very nice), the o-ring-containing nozzle, most of their little springs, the the bearings and their shims. The only thing that's mysterious to me is the trigger assembly, though going by the rest of their parts, it'll be good too. I would suspect it will be a very good mechbox. Think of the Modify gearbox as a collection of nothing but aftermarket upgrade parts, whereas the G&P gearbox gearbox is essentially a bunch of stock parts. I have personally snapped 4 stock G&P gears in the last year and expect to snap 2 more before this year is out... With the G&P gearbox, you absolutely should expect to add about 30 - 50 bucks in gearset upgrades for when the stock ones explode. The only thing I'd watch out for with the Modify gearbox is the piston. If yours comes with the translucent purple piston, you may want to replace it with something else. I've heard it's brittle, and I personally have one exemplar in my broken parts bin that is in a frozen state of rack collapse. |
it's the fucking auto correct. I meant "comparison".

If you guys have any other gearboxes to suggest that arent Systema(Overpriced Crap) I'm all ears. I looked at those 2 cause they were the best choices available in Canada. I can do USA/China if you guys think I can get something better outside Canada.

VFC is top notch and compared to the other 2 is better bang for your buck IMO. Hella lot better than stock G&P (no gearset to replace), and not as expensive as the Modify but still offers a competitive performance level. I'm quite pleased with VFC these days. To get an idea of how much I like them, I'm planning on dropping in a VFC gearbox into a G&P shell in the next 4-5 months to get a kickass gun. |
Does the rear-wired one come with a connector? Doesnt have one on the picture... Was looking at that one too, but i read that VFC gearboxes weren't the best. Gun are Awsome tho, if i buy new i buy VFC.
|
No it's just the rear wiring harness. You'll need to buy the VFC rear wire connector set. Basically it's two wires with "bullet pins" on one end and the connector on the other end, it's for ease of connecting and disconnecting things. eg. my M4 wired to deans in the front is really really hard to separate the upper and lower when I take it apart because the wires with the connector on the end just doesn't fit into the space between the barrel and I have to bend it in a weird way trying to force it through... If I had spade connectors or the VFC bullet connectors it would be easy but alas it's just one solid wire with connectors on the end...

VFC makes fantastic gearboxes. All the ones I looked at have perfect compression OOTB. The only parts you should change is the pistonhead since it's metal and correct the AOE to prolong the life of the clear piston. The clear piston isn't as bad as it may appear; it's certainly leaps ahead of the ACM stock pistons and the Modify dark purple one. I ran a VFC mechbox mostly stock (changed pistonhead, wired to MOSFET) on an 11.1v lipo
(~32 RPS @ 350FPS) for over a year and I had zero issues. |
G&P's are okay but suffer from a brittle piston that will shatter on you and the axles on the gears are weak and eventually break. (and I could never get my G&P to be fully compatible with an older metal CA receiver)
The modify is solid but don't over look king arms drop ins. |
Try a Lonex gearbox They even have pre-built high speed or high torque gearboxes.
|
Out of those two, the modify one.

VFC have fantastic bodies. Better finish and quality than a G&P. VFC 416D final water test - YouTube |
+1 to the Lonex drop-ins. They are reputed to have extremely high quality internals and can take a beating on very high rps setups.

Not in stock :( Was one of my choices.

The KA box is one I'd wait for. Or you could pm Jugglez and ask him when he will have it back in stock.
|
I've checked out both...I'd take either the Modify or the KA over the G&P anyday.
The new batch of KA's are very, very nice. They are certainly a notch above their previous gen and stock mechboxes. Some guys insist that the stock KA pistons be swapped out...others don't bother. I've got several (now) empty KA complete mechbox boxes in the workshop...if that's any indicator that they're good to go. The new modify complete mechboxes are very nicely assembled. I do not have personal usage time on them, just observation and reports from others. Their mechbox shells are solid...although some have said they had fitment issues in different bodies. They're still said to be "unbreakable" though. Overall...very, very impressed with Modify parts and their assembled mechboxes. My next V2 will be a Modify one....the last chance I had to buy one, I didn't need one. If neighter were in stock...I'd PM Jugglez and get another in. |
Think ill go with the modify... I know the KA is still good, but if im putting cash out might as well get the best one possible.
|
If you are good with gearboxes, you can try this. Add some parts and you'll have an amazing CNCed aluminum gearbox less than $200.
