Boots

Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a new pair of boots, as mine just arent cutting it (damn blisters) I have no idea what to look for, so can anyone suggest a brand/cut/ and or style? (by style i mean jungle etc.) Thanks.

Sorry, couldn't resist:)

BooKoo November 4th, 2007 23:22

I have a pair of 8' Magnum Stealth with the side zipper. Phenomenal boot, fits like a running shoe and is insanely comfortable.

Phobos November 4th, 2007 23:27

Thanks scooby steve...i think these will be perfect! http://www.jollywalkers.com/inc/sdetail/646

Zippered boots arent all that good, zippers tend to bust out.

For me, I wear Magnum Stealths, Danner Acadias an the standard Jungle an Desert Boots. Served me well so far in the Army.

Phobos November 4th, 2007 23:59

Heres a question for someone who has gone through alot of well...magnum boots...haha kinda specific, but whats the best style? stealth?

Chingyul November 5th, 2007 00:03

There is no best style or boot; everyone has different feet so what works for someone might not work for another. Check out a good surplus store that sells new boots try a few on, etc.

Phobos November 5th, 2007 10:46

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Anyone know if magnum stealths do good in a forest environment?

Brian McIlmoyle November 5th, 2007 11:03

Duty boot VS Field Boot

You have to buy boots according to their possible use.

Duty Boots ( like what police wear ) are made for an urban environment, and for driving.. they are typically light weight.. have a tred optimised for use on concrete and ashphalt, Often they come with a side zip option.

These boots are great for street wear.. and even everyday wear and for indoor and urban OPS.. they are not a field boot and are not a good solution for someone who plays in the field more than in urban/indoor environments.

Do yourself a favor and buy a good field boot. If you want lighter weight and breathability, get a good quality "jungle" boot or a "desert" boot.. there are lots of good quality surplus Arid Environment boots out there now.

as with everything that you will stake the protection of your body on.. buy the absolute best boots you can afford. and expect to pay more than $100 for new boots.

If you do choose to buy a duty boot for field use,, you will be replacing them in a year.. they just can't take it.

Magnums are an excellent boot. The 2 main problems with them is they get wet easily (although there's a Goretex version) and they don't provide a ton of ankle support. But they're damned comfy, like wearing a hightop sneaker. Great boots, I've worn them for years. Your feet will thank you.

ThunderCactus November 5th, 2007 18:24

Check out desert boots, bates, converse, altama, blackhawk.
And remember, if you pay 40$ for a pair of boots, you get a pair of boots worth 40$. Boots are the one thing in your kit you should always spend some extra money on.

Phobos November 5th, 2007 18:41

I just need to know if magnums work well in forest/woodland conditions.

-Skeletor- November 5th, 2007 19:17

I've used them an they work alright, depends on the terrain if its really broken uneven ground they kinda suck, least they did when I did a ruck march through tank ruts, etc Dunno if any boots would have been good for that though lol.

But overall they've been pretty good for me. SWATs are another boot I've heard good things about, lots of guys in BN got them.

T_A_N_K November 5th, 2007 20:47

I have a pair of magnums they are great. I think they are either Stealth's or Storm's. Ive had them for over a year and abuse them like crazy as I use them for everything. Strange how come people say they aren't waterproof, I never remember by feet ever being wet. I also only spent about $125 after tax, new.

Chingyul November 5th, 2007 23:37

Indeed it was a shameless plug. They are a shade of green though. Cross between tan and OD.

[Lithium] November 6th, 2007 02:35

Dakota Traditional Hikers with Crater Outsole are what i use. Got them from marks for $100.. I hike with them, and use them for everyday use.. Very, very comfortable

Phobos November 6th, 2007 19:22

Cool, thanks Lithium. I'll look into that.

Mantelope November 6th, 2007 19:26

Just started using a pair of Oakley SI Assault 6"... they're pretty tyte.

cndzn November 6th, 2007 19:46

Altama ExoSpeeds..

I have the desert version for summer use and the black waterproof version for fall/winter. Awesome boots.
USCav had the waterproof Exospeeds on sale.....landed at my door for just over $100, including shipping via UPS.....(yes, UPS)

Highly recommended.

leblanc74 November 6th, 2007 21:03

or you can just get a pair of hickers, which you could wear them all the time...now that is more practicle...I got Merrell with are extremly comfortable....

Phobos November 6th, 2007 21:19

I REALLY want some Magnum Phantoms..Do you guys think i'd be okay wearing them in the forest? Perhaps check out a pic of them so you can see the bottom, they look like they would give good traction. Tell me what you think. http://www.magnumboots.com/tacticalboots/5515.html

Another for the Altama Exospeed. I've got the side zip ones (wear with good socks when it's dry, Sealskinz waterproof socks when it's wet). They've lighter then my street shoes, have great ankle support, and are very comfortable. After along day of getting shot up, everything hurts but my feet :D

Scooby Steve November 6th, 2007 21:46

What about sizing? Which boots go by your regular shoe size and which ones require a size smaller than regular. I ask because I want to buy some online.

-Skeletor- November 6th, 2007 22:14

From my experiance military boots like Jungle an Desert are one size smaller than my shoe size but Magnums are the same as my shoe size

I'm using the current bundeswehr issue boots. Often called "german para boots". These things are ugly as hell, but extremely comfy. They are made of 100% leather, cushioned, waterproof and breathable. No blister, no pain, no sweat and no smell.

Where's you get them/how much? They dont look ugly to me!

+1 for this.

One note though, the lacing system I find you have to get used to to get it laced tight on your foot, but once you figure it out it's not bad at all.

That's what I meant when I said they were ugly. Because the tongue is so big and the eyelets so far apart, it never looks neatly laced.

Phobos November 7th, 2007 20:03

Do the sizes of those boots differ from normal sizes? ie: is size 42 (GER) actually size 9 (US)

Also, shipping must be a b**ch, isnt it?

Conversion charts for shoe sizes are all slightly different. I wear size 9 US, and my boots are size 43 EURO (270). They fit just right, but I wouldn't mind if they were slightly bigger.

Shipping for something as big as boots will always be a bitch, unless you order from Canada or someone on ebay.

I have a question that has been bothering me. I have a pair of bates m-9 assault with the lowest weight thinsulate interior. These boots make my feet sweat like a champ. When my feet sweat my feet get blisters. There great for cold weather but when I tried to wear them for a ruck march my feet looked like death. I then got a pair of magnums which made my blister problem go away. I preferred the comfort of the bates though they felt very comfy just not good for walking. My question is has anyone tried the bates m-9 desert boots and if so how warm are they on the feet. i need a good hiking/desert boot.

mr_gomez November 14th, 2007 02:13

Only god knows what style boot im wearing. their watter-proof, made by gore-tex, warm and comfortable. very good in winter and near water. Anyway, buy boots at a store like a surplus, then you know if the boots you bought fit and are comfortable.
