Home Made Snow Camo for Any Rifle
Hey all, I was bored today and was looking at my paintball (yes I know not airsoft) gun. I was thinking of how I could make a snow camo cover for it and started looking around my room for a solution. And finally I found one, a sock laying on the ground...
I took three normal tube socks and cut them up a bit and was able to cover the main parts of the gun. Now I realize that this is a paintball gun but with the exception of the hopper it is really no different than a airsoft rifle. So you could probably do the same thing with a m4/m16 airsoft rifle. So here was my result: The gun went from this: http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/1762/dscf0040wr6.jpg To this: http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/9...eached2ic6.jpg Now I realize that the socks I used were old and dirty, you can see lots of hole around the butt stock area and the sock used to cover the hopper probably could have used some bleach. But this was just to see if it would work and how it would look. Also the tape on the hopper was to hold that sock on because there was nothing protruding that I could hook it to. I can get past the ghettoness of the whole idea and I could see myself actually using this method. However a custom made camo sock would be better, but hey this is something pretty much anyone can do and its totally free, plus who doesn't have some mismatched socks laying around? I plan on taking it outside and seeing how it contrasts with the snow. I will let you know how it works... |
Looks pretty..... funky?
|
I see yellow stains as well, out of Kleenex were you?
Lol, white masking tape works well too, although difficult to get to stick to some areas of guns (RIS as an example). Don't need to completely cover the guns since the best way to go is to consider a snow covered evergreen tree, bunch of green mixed in with a bunch of white. All white will give you away in the forest as much as all black will when around trees and standing, unless you are prone in deep snow. |
Well, you may not be able to see the gun well in the snow, but if they were old dirty socks lying around, the funky smell may end up giving away your position. lol
Seriously though, it's not a bad idea. Very ghetto, that's for sure, but certainly seems to get the job done. |
Yea keep in mind you don't have to use old ass socks lol... I just didn't want to cut up any new ones...
|
Hey Hey, took it outside. Looks a bit better in the snow...

Does it keep the gun warm and dry also? :D
|
But seriously in the spirit of no one left behind, snowcam.
White guntape cut in splinters like the old dazzle camo on ships. Applied as in tiger stripes to break up the outline. Removed right after use or it will trap moisture underneath. There may not be much steel in these things but safe rather than sorry. |
Yea I know that guntape is a better way of doing it. However I just liked the idea of an easy to put on easy to remove cover. Also the tape could potentially damage the gun if it tore off paint or something. The sock if anything would add protection to it.

Any stretch of white fabric wrapped around the rifle will do.

He is right, RIS would be wiered even with rail covers, lots of open spots to punch through, so what I did was put on a set of old regular M4 handgrips, tape them solid, then cover with masking tape. I covered the whole front end, bipod in some places as well, then I took some Krylon OD camo paint with some cheap plastic fern leaves and just hit it lightly leaving the patterns all over, gives it that neat white/od look and not just solid OD patches. I did the same to the body itself, as well as my scope. Didnt bother with the grip or my stock, since I have a battery bag, wouldnt work as well, so I just plan on using a white cover on the back to finish it off. Will get some pictures later, Stalker already has some of his.. I called him a genious again for like the milionth time.. Best part, you can do what I did, and just peel it off later.. non permanent or residue. |
lol I thought that was dirty underware on your paintball hopper!

I find the textured look created by the elastic portion of the sock surprisingly well at breaking up what'd otherwise be just a solid white spot. That and the yellow stain...

Still, that yellow stain is fucking disturbing. |

Problem with the socks though is they'll retain water. It would be like wrappin your gun in a sponge. No thanks
|
For the sake of avoiding any further yellow stain jokes I bleached the socks using the powers of photoshop...
Also I don't know if it's just me but when I play I rarely find myself in the prone. The lowest I usually get is taking a knee, other than that most of the time I am standing/running. So with the way I play as long as it wasn't snowing out I think my gun would stay pretty dry. However I can't speak for everyones playing styles... |
I liked that bandage idea, seems easier than cutting up some old socks, not to mention cleaner ;)
So I raided the first aid kit and found a perfect bandage, and wrapped up the gun again. This looks much better, and is not nearly as high on the ghetto scale. Also worked great in the snow... http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/2083/croppedxj9.jpg http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/815/dscf0144ov8.jpg |
its the star wars pillow that does it for me :)
|
My roommate until this year had star wars sheets, star wars blanket and star wars pillows, with star wars figures on the wall and star wars posters up on many of the walls.
Pillow is nothing... |
Yea, whats sweet about that pillow is it's from the late 70's or early 80's. Vintage man, vintage.

I was thinking of using a white thick plastic bag tied down with white string or maybe kept loose to break up the shape of the gun and to make it more water resistant. I never really wanted to paint my gun to make it fit different environments. I'll just but some multicam cloths/strips for summer. |
