First airsoft gun
Ok I have never owned an airsoft gun before, the closest thing I own is an old crosman pellet gun lol. I have read around and decided to buy an AEG from buyairsoft.ca since a friend bought the "Ultimate Bolt Action Sniper Rifle" and had nothing but praises for the service. I was thinking of getting the M4 Deluxe
(link: http://buyairsoft.ca/catalog/product...roducts_id=401 ) but I question the quality of the plastic gearbox. I can spend about 160 at max (including shipping) so I dont have a lot of choices. Can some one recommend me a good AEG if this one isnt up to par. Keep in mind I am a new player and this is just to play with friends, although they plan to go to local arenas so I didnt want to get completely destroyed lol. |
Welcome to ASC.
Good to see more people getting involved in airsoft. Firstly, most members aren't fans of buyairsoft, they apparently have a bad rep with customer service, I'm sure many have had success with them, much like your friend, but all I've heard is negative feedback. Airsoft in Canada is an expensive hobby as you will grow to learn more about and $160 really isn't much to start with. The rifle you provided in your link says 'out of stock eta 30 days' thats a big complaint that I've heard from buyairsoft. They don't seem to restock their guns, atleast not in the timeline promised. I've never seen the gun you speak of but I think you'd be much better off investing into a Kraken(clear bodied AK47) or the Broxa Evolution(clear bodied MP5). Something with solid internals. I'm unsure of the price for one of those but I think it would be close to your price range. Best of luck. |
I see, thanks for the reply. Is there a better site I can use? I realize 160 isnt much but its all I have at the moment due to financial issues.
I know it is out of stock aswell lol. I figured I could wait cause we are starting in april but if they dont restock I will just look around. |
You can get an Aftermath Kraken from Cabelas or something similar for anywhere from $120 to $200, but that's about the least you can spend and still have a decent gun.
|
Unfortunately $160 isn't much to start for airsoft. I ordered a few airguns from BuyAirsoft with no problems though I don't know about their airsofts, the link you provided didn't even provide the name of the manufacturer so I have my doubts about it. Though its rare, there have been a few guns here in the classified around that price range though even if you won't shop there, getting AV'd can open up access to the retailers who may be able to find something to fit your budget. But I would still recommend saving up more. I'm new to the sport as well and I budgeted just under $1000 for everything, I ended up spending close to $2000 and I'm still adding.

Here is review of the gun done by an ASC member:Aftermath Kraken AK47 AEG - Airsoft Canada

ok, that seems like a good friggen deal lol...so should I go ahead and order it? |
Well not if you don't have the funds haha. But thats the best gun that you'll find for the price your going for.
|
Its on a huge sale but unfortunately it is on backorder. I got extremely excited when i saw it because it is similar to the one I saw when I was in the states and got to try. Is there any other weapon on cabelas that is decent? cause they seem to have amazing prices compared to buyairsoft.ca plus a bigger selection
|
Looking at the Cabelas website, the "Panther Arms M4A1 Carbine" and "Sig Sauer S-552 Machine Gun" are JG rebrands and would be good quality.
Everything else there, besides maybe the Broxa or Lycoan(iffy on those even), is crap that you shouldn't touch. |
Thanks for the help guys, I think I will just wait for the kraken to come back in and pray it is still on sale...hell of a deal, be a shame if I missed it.

THAT kraken is not the good one. it shoots 380 fps with .20 the real kraken (http://velocityarms.ca/index.php?mai...products_id=94) <----- THAT WAY this one shoots 370 with .20 its the new and ameliorated version (not that new but still not as old as the cabelas one) I pretty sure im right but correct me if im wrong |
Unless calebras has stored Krakens for a year or two, they are exactly the same. New versions are completely TM compatible I think, this includes the hop-up (which in old versions wern't). Take out the screws on the buttplate and JB weld the plastic and metal pieces together, or you'll lose it in a game when the threads strip (which they will cause of the minimal contact area.

What ever you do stay away from the M4 Deluxe. That was one of the first aeg's that i bought and i had to return it right away. It looks pretty cool however the trigger is plastic and breaks very easily. I bought that at cabelas a year ago (maybe aftermath fixed the problem), brought it home, charged the battery and went outside to test it out. I didn't even squeeze the trigger hard and it just snapped! So my advice is stay away from that gun. I have heard that aftermath put metal triggers in their new guns.
Hope that this helped, if not then just disregard this post. |

TLDR. but... May I add in that buyairsoft is going to be under new management. (Canadian Airsoft Supply bought it out I believe).
You can't really slam it anymore until we see what the new management has in store for buyairsoft. |
Keep in mind what else you will have to spend money on to play airsoft. Gear such as vests, you need a good pair of boots, goggles, BDU/camo, mags, batteries, other accessories, upgrades/replacement gearbox parts, upgrades/replacement external parts, BBs, game costs, travel to games... I could keep on going.
To get really started in airsoft you will need about $1000 for basic gear and whatever else I listed. |

I started with a TM M4 RIS I picked up in Japan for $230 new out of the box, telling myself "it's just another model....yeah it's 1/1 scale and, yeah there are moving parts and it's really detailed, but it's just another model, like my Tamiya cars and ships". I was never going to play, but then the more I held it, the more I wanted to shoot it. One thing led to another, and I found myself with a used battery and a charger, and some Crappy Tire BBs......next thing I know i'm buying a vest and ordering extra mags from Ehobby. Anyways, I'm a noob, and let me tell you from one noob to another ty12004, get into it any way you can, try Craigslist. I've come across some used guns that are cheap. Maybe rent your guns for now, see what you like, and save your $160 until it grows into something a bit more. That thing you saw for $160 will probably provide you with some fun, but if you want to flip it one day (and you probably will), you probably won't get much and you've lost most of your $160. If you like it, then you can start picking up gear a bit at a time....Yeah, you'll probably spend close to $1000, now that it's out, but it's not like you'll have to drop that much at once....look at me, $20 here, $50 there....it's less painless that way...for us poor folk anyways. |
meh, that doesnt really scare me off. I am a pc gamer as well so $1000 isnt all that much compared to that addiction. I have just been looking into a fun sport that gets the rest of my friends off of the couch. We used to go paintballing but the price really threw me off since the arenas around here require you to use their paintballs and it is $10 for 90. Plus I like my guns so using a replica, albeit clear plastic at the moment, really makes the game more exciting in my eyes.

You'll end up spending $1,000 once you have your kit.. whether you do it all at once or piece by peace. Airsoft, compared to paintball, has a higher startup cost but is significantly cheaper to play ($10 for 2,000 rounds, pennies to charge a battery). The thing you have to consider with a gun like the Kraken or any other clone, is the chances that it's going to break down and cost to repair. Most people will tell you it's still cheaper to buy a clone, but that assumes you know how to fix it if/when it does break.
I personally think clones are overrated. Yea, they allow people who don't want to spend a lot of money to get into the sport... but I've compared numerous clones to their TM and CA equivalents... and they have always been found wanting. Personally, I still recommend to newbies that they start with a Classic Army or something. I started with a Classic Army G36 and have never regretted it. Though to be perfectly honest, the best "clone" available at the time was the CYMA 0.27 (essentially the Aftermath Lycon) which wasn't a great gun. JG has come a long way, but I still think they're a far cry from CA/TM/G&P/ICS. But anyway, to start, here's a cost breakdown on top of the gun itself. Things with an astriks * are pretty essential. *good battery charger: $35+ *good batteries: $25-$35+ each *BBs: $15 for 2,000 .25s or .28's. Additional magazines: $15-25 each, depending on what you want. BDU's: $60-$120 good Vest (never get a shitty vest): $100-$200+, depending on used or new and where you find it good boots: $100 additional shit I forgot: $10-$200+ So you see, if $160 is your entire budget... it's not going to go very far. |
I've gotta ask, where exactly did you find a good battery for $35? i'm in need of one.
