What's The Strangest Place You Found Gear?

Or the oddest thing you found to use as gear?

After a PM from Viking asking me about a pair of gloves I was wearing in a picture, I figured it'd be interesting to hear who else found cool gear in an odd place, or an odd item that turned out to be cool gear.

(My gloves came from Extra Foods; they were President's Choice gardening gloves that I got for $5 on clearance sale)

I have a Penney keeping my stock from wobbling because I'm too lazy to fix it.

gunscythe October 13th, 2009 01:09

I have been wearing a $30 pair of safety glasses from canadian tire that look like sunglasses and don't even know I'm wearing them. I also use a lot of Blenderm tape from Ebay (I can't buy it in Yellowknife, so bought 10 cases of it on ebay). This is 100% useful in R/C, and somewhat useful in airsoft. Blenderm sticks underwater and is like magic.

And FINALLY, I use a cut piece of a chair felt to keep magazines on cansoft guns in line.

scubasteve October 13th, 2009 01:14

You can find some pretty sweet stuff at Princess Auto in Winnipeg. I've heard of people buying alpenflage and ACU 24 hour assault packs there. For cheap to!!!!

Outcast569 October 13th, 2009 01:30

T&T in calgary here. Its a large asian/fish market. Grabbed a pair of gloves there used them for shooters gloves. Awesome grip and fairly thing yet very warm. I think I paid 6 bucks for them.

I love shopping at T&T whenever I back in Vancouver.
Unfortunately Saskatoon doesn't have a T&T.

Thats too bad. Its a really great place for the odd things most places dont carry.

TokyoSeven October 13th, 2009 03:44

I wish we had one here so much! Could you imagine being able to go to T&T every day and buy a fancy cake?

yeah, I totally derailed a thread about gear and turned it into a thread about cake. Lets go back on topic now.

aznpos531 October 13th, 2009 06:51

I now have a strange craving for cake...

Blackthorne October 13th, 2009 07:16

Found an issue Nomex flight suit at Markham Fair.

You're welcome.

FOX_111 October 13th, 2009 09:11

I found a grimlock on the ground in a parking lot.

I have this knack of finding lost things. It's cool when no one will claim it.

Jube8311 October 13th, 2009 09:52

Oakley Assaults in my size at a Winners for $60!

They had the tan ones too but I didn't buy them and I regret it. I have never seen them there again.

Lerch October 13th, 2009 11:21

Hmm found a helmet, ground sheet and CVC gloves when I was clearing out cages at work one day. Lucky me, now I don't have to hand any of those in when I leave.

I'm assuming that you are talking about boots; not the gloves?

https://www.oakleyforces.ca/

I picked up my gloves fro $55 canadian, but geez... $60 for boots is a fantastic price.

Goge October 13th, 2009 13:15

little bits of clothing like sweaters, issue boots, issue wool hats, wool liner-gloves and a toaster (tho not airsoft related) at Value Village. =) I was surprised to see issue boots for $15.

DuffMan October 13th, 2009 13:18

I often use a crocodile skin Samsonite by Alexander McQueen boarding bag as a responder's kit.
I ALMOST bought a 1 of 10 14K gold, red velvet lined Christian Dior guitar case to be modified at Harrod's into a rifle case for about 85% off. The poor bastard couldn't offload the damn thing. Even at 85% off it was about 1200GBP.
Also, toiletry bags make GREAT pistol pouches.

TheSlee October 13th, 2009 14:41

goggles from Wickes (a DIY place here in the UK) used by builders. Cost me £2 (about $4) and have withstood more punishment than my friend's guarder shooting glasses, including my custom safety test (point blank with a 500fps sniper 5 times) :P

Mikhail October 13th, 2009 14:59

Found two sets of Firepower multicam BDU's while visiting Cloverdale Fleamarket. The vendor had no idea of the value and sold em for 15 bucks each...even threw in a extra acu shirt if I bought everything...his market must have been just hunters.

Mapcinq October 13th, 2009 15:05

I once found a partially used condom at the local Salvation Army. I got it for 50 cents, brought it home threw it in the dishwasher, and have been using that bad boy ever since!

Assault Pioneer October 13th, 2009 15:13

I still use a snowboarding helmet I bought from crappy tire long time ago to double as an IBH, nobody has noticed.
and I use Mechanix gloves but Im prettysure thats normal and everyone does

GSK88 October 13th, 2009 15:16

1 hole balaclava at the corner store for $5. Right next to signs that say "Smile thief, you're on camera"...

MoreToasties October 13th, 2009 15:56

Multicam cooking knife carrying case at a dollar store.

I cut out the plastic sleeves meant for holding knives and it fir my extended WA Hi Capa like a glove.

I dont know why the carrying case was camo though; maybe they were trying to make cooking cool.

L473ncy October 13th, 2009 16:37

Sorry Tex but that pic is going into the Spelling/Grammatical Fail thread :)

Look at the bottom of your pic where the watermark is.

Dammit. Fixed. Nice catch.

mcguyver October 13th, 2009 22:45

I've found some good deals at flea markets in Arizona. A little out of the way, but you can buy everything from MREs to all sorts of knives, gear, guns, you name it. All you need is cash, no questions asked and it's all legal.

Most of it you could never bring back with you though, but some of it you can.

My suitcase was stuffed with goodies my last trip back.

Spawn28 October 13th, 2009 22:52

Battery operated glow stick with a 4 way switch at the dollar store and their door/window alarms make wicked trip wires

Hey, yeah, I just got some of those "glow sticks" (they change colours, right?) from Shopper's... and a supposedly "strobe" light for jack-o-lanterns that's really just blinking christmas tree lights; might make a good night target or something.

drew2r October 14th, 2009 02:20

I found an OD CIRAS with pouches at some random pawn shop in Windsor but sadly I did not buy it :(

Yeah we use them for hit sticks at night games and there good indoors as well with the strobe effect

Aegiis October 14th, 2009 20:20

Not a store, but when stuck, I found out that a laptop bag shoulder strap makes a excellent, solid, save-my-ass-at-the-last-minute 2 points sling.

Frozen Tex October 17th, 2009 23:24

A couple of times now, I've played in cold weather, and to keep my battery from getting cold, I stuffed a glove warmer in my Crane stock.

I plan on taping one to the end of my extended mac11 pistol mag ;)

Coma October 18th, 2009 16:17

Got a vintage M65 field coat in good condition at the Salvation Army for four bucks the other day.

Micleo October 21st, 2009 19:20

Hey! I work there!

Yeah, I work at the Princess Auto here in South Edmonton! I bought myself one of those ACU 24 hour assault packs for $30.00. Here's a list of the stuff we've got hanging around. These items should be in most stores, in the SURPLUS section.

- ACU 24 hour assault pack - $30.00 - Bought one, it's great!
- German Army folding shovels - $20.00
- US Army cold weather paratrooper boots - $70.00-$90.00 - Black and White
- Desert Camo M88 Helmet cover - $18.00
- ACU canteen holder & Canteen - $12.00

Personally, I've bought myself an ACU pack, 8 pairs of ballistic-rated goggles (for my airsoft parties :b), some really comfy masonry gloves, and the German army shovel. Pretty sweeeet.

Nikodemus February 14th, 2012 15:56

Picked up an issue nomex flight suit in sage green today at the Salvation Army thrift store in town for $10.

That and a necro. Good day.

Frozen Tex February 14th, 2012 16:05

Nice find!

And thanks for performing necromancy on my thread. I had given it up for dead over a year ago...

Desmodus February 14th, 2012 16:39

I found what was basically a brand new set of Chilean army mountain camouflage in a garbage bag with hand-me down clothing to be donated. Was a wicked surprise! I have no idea how rare it is or how much its worth :(

Frozen Tex February 14th, 2012 17:15

I could probably mention here that I got shirts and pants that I particularly use for "WWII" gear from Old Navy.

ThunderCactus February 14th, 2012 18:35

I made a highly effective airsoft mortar out of 4" and 2" poop tube from home depot, and fashioned the rounds from paper cups, electrical tape and floor sweepings from XT.

Gets a good 650ft range, dangerous to use in open terrain though

That's awesome. Got any video of this thing in action?

grizz125 February 14th, 2012 18:45

I cant even count the amount of things ive found at vallue village and salvation army.

Dingo February 14th, 2012 22:27

"House of Knives" carries a large selection of Surefire lights. Got a pressure switch and a small surefire light (non-tactical).

Freeze February 14th, 2012 22:38

So my friend supposedly bought this random laptop bag (or at least it looks ok enough to pass for one) from Goodwill and deep inside of one of the pockets was a old, rusted 1911 airgun. Didn't work, but heck, that's a heck of a find!

My weirdest find so far was when I bought a sweater at Winners and apparently, it came with elbow pads. But sadly, they can't really be used for something like airsoft since they are thin enough to be done in by my fingernails. And I had JUST cut my nails that day.

CDN_Stalker February 14th, 2012 22:45

A dog clicker from Petsmart!

Cliffradical February 14th, 2012 23:05

I found a genuine helmet cover and BDU top in chocolate chip camo.
This was at an antique store which doesn't even deal in surplus or militaria.
They had been sitting around for so long the lady sold me both for $18.

TaroBear February 15th, 2012 00:59

The flashlight I have mounted under my SPAS-12 is a 2 dollar LED flashlight I picked up on impulse from Canadian Tire. It works surprisingly well still.

Edit: Oh, totally forgot. Years and years ago, I used to load my Marui P90 mags by dropping BBs down a funnel into the loading rod. It originally belonged in the kitchen, but it wasn't missed, so I kept using it.

Gulag February 15th, 2012 01:08

I found aviator's leather helmet and breathing mask buried under tons of other old shit when I was helping school keeper back on the elementary.

Wasn't really a gear, but we used it few times in scenario games.

Kutter February 15th, 2012 09:57

Found a couple pairs of Oakley S1 Assault boots in Winners once. Would have bought them but they were all size 6-7 so way too small. They were also in the women's section too, go figure.

Don't have to imagine. There's one 30 seconds from my work. Great for dim sum and a quick sushi platter.

Same here. But the things that stand out the most are 2 complete tan DEU from the 1980, an old style (before CADPAT) MCpl vest with all the patches, and a small tactical backpack with an internal hydration pack.

Jcotter February 15th, 2012 16:54

costco has 3 packs of tactical lights for $18.00 with strobe and batteries.

Bullet__Proof March 22nd, 2012 12:15

Bought the same couple weeks ago their amazing !! With the batteries included I'm not sure if I should buy new batteries or a brand new package since it's so cheap XD

Most of my BDU's where bought at Value Vilage or Good Will when I was first atarting out. Never payed more then $6.00 bucks for pants. My first boots where CF #2 combats from Value Village for $14.00 bucks and they still had the little rubber knubs on bottem. I think they might be catching on cause I found a pair last week with $29.99 tag but thats still not bad. Yard sales work to. bought a Sykes Fairborne dagger for $10.00. and a wood holster/stock for a Browning automatic for $10.00. Not airsoft but still good deals. I am a cheap bugger and proud of it.

SuperCriollo March 23rd, 2012 12:51

Bought an old antifrag vest from a garage sale 2 years ago. Paid 20 bucks for it :P
