Flashlight
Hey guys,
I'm looking at getting a flashlight for my AEG and was wondering what is the difference between the Xenon and LED lights?? Also, what amount of Lumens is bright enough? Would 270Lm be okay, or should I go to a 500Lm?? Thanks. |
LED is for Light Emitting Diode. It's the new technologie.
Xenon is the old tech. LED taclights last usually longer and are more shock resistant. For a taclight, 60lum is the bare minimum. Something around 80-120lum is best for CQB. If you go over that, you will blind yourself. Also, over that, you will have less runtime. a Typical 80lum light that run on 2 CR123 batteries will last 60 minutes of continuous use. That is the figure for incandecent bulb (Xenon) and LED should be a bit more depending on the output. When choosing a light, be sure to chose one that have a good reflector inside. Surefire, Fenix and other tactical light makers have good reflectors, that make a nice even beam. You don't want a beam that look like the one on a Maglight, with the dark hole in the middle. If you want a good benchmark, check out the reviews on Surefire lights. They are all good. Then you can compare with other manufacturers. |
Pelican and Wolfeyes make good tac lights as well. Maglite suck donkey balls at the best of times. Streamlight aren't too bad either.

I've always been a fan of M3 taclights, i have a G&P, sure, it's for pistols, but its compact and doesnt take up rail space on my SCAR, and its very bright, 9 volt bulb and rechargeable cells

Thanks for the info guys.....
This is one of the lights I was looking at: http://shop.ehobbyasia.com/accessori...00-lumens.html What do you guys think? |
decent price, pointlessley bright though, your choice however

G&P R500 Scorpion Tac-Lite. 500 Lumens, Rechargable. Worth Every Cent If your a night game fanatic like me.
Both from Personal Experience, and from those who it was used against. I own two of these units. One with a built in armalite handguard in DE and a RAS mount in OD If you have the dough for it, its one of the best on the market. Its been described by others to "turn night into day." Extremely Durable, Lasts a LONG time, Extremely reliable. Nuff said. |
500 lumens? Holy crap. My friends 60 lumen headlamp we use for camping is bright. I can't even imagine that. You could fly a friggin helicopter with that thing.
|
I have the Surefire E2D Led and it's awesome. I use it for practical purposes as well.

The O-Light brand flashlights that Duy at airsoftparts.ca sells are great little torches, various brightness (including map and strobe) make it extremely versitile.

I made a review few days ago: http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=97713
Might be good for you! ;) |
Hey, I recently wanted a good strong flashlight (...dunno why...) and ended up buying a "MX power ML-900" (700 lumens goodness... :P....).... But the point of my post is, by the time i chosed wich flashlight i really wanted, i was googleing the flashlight model/brand for review, and came across this website
Flashlight Reviews - CandlePowerForums (its a flashlight forum & learned alot on flashlights there too) also, i found a great website to buy from (with free shipping to Canada eith every purchase! And cheap prices too!!!! :) It's www.dealextreme.com (they are also customer review on that website) hope it helps |
Yep, good selection at DE
Got two of that one : UltraFire U4-MCU Cree Q5-WC 3-Mode 230-Lumen LED Versatile Flashlight (CR123A/18650/18500/AAA) I modded one with a pressure switch http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.17401 Great for the price, use it in real life too. |
I'm a little crazy but I got myself a 1000Lm LED tac light for CQB... sure helps to light up the dark side of the arena. Its good and bad like all other things. But sure blinds my opponents. hehehe!

The cap does not fit, and since I'm lazy, I didn't bother searching for the right one, I just swapped the internals in the original cap, with a metal washer to ensure good electrical contact between the different diameters. |
For airsoft use (I also use one on a real Colt 933) I would recommend this from Crosman, of all places:
http://www.crosman.com/airguns/accessories/gear/NS0423 It is an aluminum sealed housing, takes two CR-123 batteries, is plenty bright, and comes with a rail mount and pigtail with pressure switch. The normal end cap has a pressure switch on the end of it. It costs $15.99 USD with all of the accessories included. I saw this at a gun show, and my friend bought it. I thought it would not be good for the price, and I was definitely proven wrong. I used it at Pine Plains, OP Red Reign, and several other big ops with night games, and so far it still works great. |
I'd recommend Fenix brand flashlights. I've handled Surefires in the past and you get a better bang for your buck with the the latest Fenix ones (can't really speak for the older models). The Fenix LD20 is worth a try.

Xenon bulbs have a limited lifespan, and also drain batteries faster. Add in the fact they have a yellowish light............... I used to have a Streamlight Scorpion, 80 Lumens I recall, would go through the CR123 batteries quickly, run time would be 1.5hrs. Now own two Surefires, the G2 LED and the G2 LED Combat Light, both LED and same batteries, run time is around 12hrs and put out 65 Lumens of white light. They are awesome, and VERY bright. Don't need huge amount of Lumens (500 will likely kill a vampire), unless you are trying to spot bombers flying at 30,000ft in the dark in order to try to shoot them down with flak. |

I'm running the TK12R2EX (Basically, TK12 revision 3 that can take 18650 batteries). It is bright, the strobe is epileptic, and the pressure switch is very high quality. The main distributor is in Canada, they seem to be Israeli designed with at least some of the parts made over there. The shipping is incredibly cheap within Canada. I got the red filter to preserve night vision, they accidentally shipped me a blue filter (and it is blue, not UV), and then fixed it by sending me the red... Yay, I now have two filters. Goto Dealextreme for the 18650 batteries and just watch how long the run time is. |

I would recommand JETbeam / Eagle tac. If you like LV or Gucci, get Surefire.
I personally use SF E2D LED and I don't think you need anything more than 125 lumen. |
I am all about the LV and Gucci...lol
E2D LED is great, good deal on the previous year's model on eBay right now(120 Lumen), 2010 model is 200 lumen. |
