Why doesnt my gun shoot that far :(

Hi there. So I bought a G&G GR16 Carbine Light rifle a long time ago and have since added a longer, tighter bore and a metal hop-up (as well as pretty things too). I've used it a few times and its always been satisfactory but I always wanted to add more to it!! (hence the upgrades).

So my buddy just got a ICS L85A2 Full Metal AEG and we started test firing our guns. His fired soo far and fast where as mine only went maybe 2/3 the distance (my rate of fire was fine). Same battery.

I'm trying to figure out why mine isn't firing as far. It seems a little short range in general not only when comparing his. I'm using .28 and .25 ammo. Could it be ammo size? Could it be my hop up isn't installed correctly? (I've always wondered if it was).

It kinda sucks that mine is so limited in range and I'd like to know why. :(

Thanks!

You need to tune the hop up a little bit maybe. Try turning the hopup up really slightly and do a few shots after each adjustment. Find the best spot where it doesn't curve upwards too much, but maintains a nice long flight path.

Is your hop adjusted? Did you install it properly? Is your barrel too long for your cylinder? Is your inner barrel too small?

What's his setting for the spring guide on the L85? At the highest setting the ICS L85 shoots over 400 fps; with properly adjusted hop-up and 28 rounds that's going to outrange any G&G with a stock spring.

have you ever cleaned your barrel? Is your new hop-up sealing properly?

The hop up is adjusted so that it curves as high as possible, otherwise the bbs drop too soon. And I'm not 100% sure if the hop up is installed perfectly as I did have some trouble with it. It does raise and lower but I don't know if it works exactly as it should? But I guess one thing I could try is cleaning it with that oil, though it's a brand new barrel.

Brand new doesn't mean it's clean, could be dusty inside. Also, you might have too much oil on your hop up rubber.

Is you're hop-up set at maximum, or just adjusted so you have the best arc?

JonMaximus March 16th, 2010 00:47

It is set on maximum. That way another reason I thought it was weird because shouldnt it be somewhere in between?

Ayashifx55 March 16th, 2010 01:34

try to test your fps using a chronograph ... maybe your fps is very low and you don't even notice that...it's simple but it can be your problem. Air leaks around your hop-up (hop up rubber, buck , air nozzle , ect...?)

You shouldn't have it set at max. That will just make your BB's fly into the sky and make your gun useless.

Shirley March 16th, 2010 02:59

Um.. Question is, how FAR do you want it to shoot?

Did you forget to put the bucking back in when you replaced the hop-up rubber?

you put the little piece of rubber in the hop up unit that sits ontop of the "rubber"? This little piece... the nub... is very important. and from what it sounds like your hop up is just using the pressure from the arm instead of using the added pressure of the nub.

that doesn't make sence... the rubber IS the bucking.... I think you ment what I ment lol

kalnaren March 16th, 2010 19:40

Yea, I was told that's the bucking.

First thing: How much longer inner barrel did you add? An m16 is 509mm. Did you go to 590mm or beyond? An m16 uses a non-ported cylinder to match the 509 mm inner barrel so if you go too much longer at some point you will need a bore-up cylinder and piston to match the volume of air needed for the longer barrel. I’ve never travelled in these waters so I don’t know the exact length where you need to change the cylinder, piston and air nozzle on an M16 beyond 509mm. Perhaps Illusion or one of the others with experience on these longer inner barrels will come along and save me here.

An example of where you don’t need to change is the difference between the M4 and the 733. The M4 uses a 363mm inner barrel and the 733 uses a 300mm and they both use the same cylinder porting.

This could very well explain your lack of distance if these items are not matched correctly. If you decide you need one consider the Modify GU-01-12 Bore kit for the M16.

Edit: I just noticed you said GR16 Carbine, if that is the same as an M4 inner barrel length and you added a longer inner barrel then again how much longer? Is it now 509mm? If so then forget the bore-up and go with a non-ported cylinder (that comes standard on an M16) and bob's your uncle!
