Upgrading a gr16 G&G
 

I literally just bought this gun, what sort of parts should I be keeping an eye out for in the near future to upgrade it.

If the gun has the bearing bushings those may go fast. Its better to have a solid bushing than ball bearing bushing.
Also your spring guide might jam since its plastic on plastic to create a ball bearing like spring guide.
Also a tightbore barrel would be a good investment.
That all said play with it stock for about a yr. and you will know what needs to be done in that time.

If you just bought your first airsoft gun... don't upgrade it until something breaks. Don't invest too much into it until you know you really like the game, and then upgrade it based on what you think it needs.

I'm just asking in general, there's nothing that needs to be replaced on this gun then? I've heard pretty good things

Reshim it. G&G guns are known for their bad shim jobs.

Really? Mine was pretty well shimmed.

Check to see if the mechbox needs reshimming before opening it. Poke the gear axle from the sides. If they move more than 0.5mm, you could stand to reshim them. Otherwise, this is your first gun, if it works, leave it alone.

Yeah umm....that's not how you open it.

Sounds like you don't have any experience with AEG's, so leave it alone and don't try opening it.

Styrak is right, if you can't even get the dust cover to open, you have no business going inside your rifle at this time.

Have you tried pulling the charging handle back to release the dust cover?

:'( I have, the dust cover has some sort of reverse spring action that the kind sir that sold it to me showed me how to open it.

Then i proceeded to not know how to open it ever again.... time to hit up youtube

I'd just leave it alone until you actually need to do something to it. Get used to the gun and how it performs. You'll know what it needs after a couple of games.

The dust cover on G&G is held closed by a spring and is opposite what most other armalite AEGs. With others, you just cock the charging handle and the dust cover springs open. G&G mount the spring backwards to keep the cover closed and have no other locking mechanism. Just pry it open with your fingernails or a small flat head screwdriver to get to the hopup adjustment.

Crunch, not all G&Gs use the reverse spring. Many of the ones in Canada (transparent receiver) have normal working releases.

phantastik, you should be able to release the dust cover by a backup means. Find a needle (or anything equally sharp and pointy). Look at the dark block structure on the outside of the dust cover. That houses the catch. Along the top edge of the block, there should be a small hole (it's more elongated than round). Poke the needle into it and push down, that should release the catch and drop the dust cover open.

Ok, I was under the impression that this was a common thing with all G&Gs, at least the ones that I've seen to date...

Regular G&G metal lines (with a few exception) don't have a dust cover release, but can be fitted with one. Their plastica lines have the dust cover release. No idea why they'd put the good feature in the cheap guns and not the metal guns.

I know first hand that VA's G&G have working releases, won't surprise me if other cansoft G&Gs do as well.
