Drilling Holes in your piston.
 

Ive seen people on youtube drill holes for porting on there pistons, is this a smart thing to do?

They're drilling holes in the piston body...to lighten it.

Lighter weight = less piston mass which can help speed up high ROF setups.

Actually, if you know what you're doing, you can remove A LOT of material from a piston and not have it shatter/fall apart on you.

Some manufacturers have produced "skeletonized" aluminum piston...benefits of a full metal piston (i.e. extreme strength) with the weight of a plastic piston.

Unless you're gunning for a very high ROF setup...it's not necessary.

If you are...buy lots of spare parts. :)

A buddy of mine does this for fun...he's buying pistons and parts weekly. Some just to try something different...some to replace busted stuff.

First I've heard of that Tys, but makes sense. I understood his question as porting a non-ported piston head, which is do-able, but not for any noticable gain.

Same concept as racing parts for high performance cars and bikes.

They are lighter and often have void spaces where possible to reduce weight. However awsome they might perform they will not last as long as normal parts.

So, like the guy above me said, yes but be prepared to replace them often and go few a few to get it right

Goes along with short stroking and modding the teeth of the piston.

Kingcobra8888 has done up some crazy rigs. He'd talk forever about building mechboxes, but never writes any of it up. I wish he'd post here. Airsoftmechanics has some good stuff...and some Philipino sites have LOTS of information (high speed, lipo, mosfets, etc...).

I had him drop by the last AEG Workshop I did and show some stuff...we just kept throwing bigger and bigger lipo's at his setup and cut loose with faster and faster bursts.

Fun stuff...TOTALLY unnecessary...but fun

I have an aluminum piston, and it's hole-y, or ported as you say. Good idea to make it lighter and not have any ill effects on your rate of fire.
