suggestion to airsoft canada site

since new accounts are being made daily (maybe), and they dont read the FAQ upon joining and making a post on how to get an airsoft gun, i believe that there should be a new message on the activation email
so new people wont be asking questions in the newbie tank
just making a suggestion

it should say; (the usual stuff and added)

This has been suggested multiple times, and the mods/staff have commented on it. Something about it not being possible with the current system or something? You're not the messiah.

Also, bolding that bottom part will do nothing.

Props for trying, and I'm sure it could be done with some serious back end work...

But -- I don't think the current ASC staff has the technical know-how on how to do everything.

You make it sound like people won't just click the activation link without reading any of the FAQs anyway.

Are they not reading the FAQ because it's difficult to find? Don't think so.

Yeah, we all choose to throw the manual out before reading it because it's more fun that way.

It is a man's job not to read instructions or ask for instructions. That's what you do when you're a boy.

It's every other man's job to ride anyone like a rented mule if they present themselves as a man but have to ask.

For the OP, you are still definitely a mule; you will not be a rider for some time yet.

How will you know when you've reached that next stage in evolution? You'll see that folks do ride you you can laugh it off without retreating into your shell.

cellulose September 6th, 2010 12:27

Haha, not possible with the current system, that's a laugh...

Its more than possible, and it's very easy to do using vBulletin (the software this site runs on). You can make it so new users require email verification like you described, and you can easily customize the message it sends. You can even make the board send a "welcoming private message" once the user activates his account, and it only takes a few mouse clicks and keyboard strokes in the Admin CP. I find that coupling both of these really increases the chances that members will read what you're trying to get them to. You can make both the email and PM list appropriate rules/FAQ links with a blatant bold, red, large font "READ THIS STUFF BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE" message at the top.

With some board modification and cleaver permission changes it's also possible to limit a users access until they've read certain topics and checked a "I verify that I've read this topic and understand it's meaning" box... You can also make it so the box isn't check-able until the user scrolls to the bottom of the page, or until a pre-set timer counts down.

vBulletin is very robust when it comes to user permissions and automation if you know how to use it correctly. So saying that it isn't possible with the current "setup" isn't accurate.

by the way, i think the lay out of the site should have been like this
instead of this way of listing:
information center
---------------------------
newbie tank

Frequently Asked Questions

reviews

it should be like this:

Frequently Asked Questions

reviews

newbie tank

when i first saw this, i instinctively see the newbie tank for asking noob questions, so i go for it without seeing the FAQ

Assault Pioneer September 6th, 2010 23:51

then people are just going to post in the FAQ for all the shit that now goes in the newbie tank like they did before the newbie tank was added
