First time mod(s)
 

If you had a stock aftermath Kraken AK-47 what would be the first time about it you would mod? I'm looking at this gun as a learner to grow with it a bit before I more to something else. Battery? barrel? motor? or what?

The first thing I would upgrade would be a new inner barrel and a new hop up unit and rubber.

New compression system.

Metal body, replace that clear plastic crap.
And if you have the stock battery and charger, replace both of those with something good (smart charger).

Agreed. Newer made Krakens can be pretty skirmishable with a good tightbore and hopup.

I'm I've been worrying over the battery a little I think I get a new charger and battery then work on the inner barrel. Thanks guys.

I also just got some mid-caps and lows caps which are a blast to use on the field :)

I believe Amos or someone may have made a post about making a Kraken more gamable. I don't have the link off hand but the first few things were; spring (downgrade to an M110 if playing outdoor, aim for 360-380 FPS), compression parts (piston, cylinder, piston head, cylinder head), hop up bucking (I think Prometheus Soft bucking is the recommended one), and inner barrel (doesn't have to be a tight barrel just make sure the inner diameter and "straightness" is consistent).

Also note that the spring is crap on the Kraken and they usually settle very fast so I'm told. You may start off shooting 410 FPS but it will gradually get weaker and maybe settle in at 380 or less. Nonetheless you should get a spring that's more consistent and doesn't "settle" like the stock Kraken spring. Something like a Modify S110 or S120 will be perfect. Keep in mind a little bit of settling is acceptable after a "breaking in" period however it should only be a few FPS difference.

If you're taking a run at this as a tinker/figure things out...it's definitely worth that. But I'd caution about setting your expectations appropriately and not letting the costs run out of hand. It's not possible to turn a pigs ear into a silk purse without basically tossing out 95% of it...and that's just not cost effective.

I'd recommend:
1. Start with what you've got...complete strip down of every part. Become familiar with how all the little bits of both the mechbox and body go together. From the front sight screw that can dent/pin your inner barrel to the crappy pice of tape that holds the sling swivel to the body to the massive amounts of unnecessary grease in the mechbox. Go over the wiring layout and connectors, etc...

2. Work on the stock mechbox as is....but aim to replace the plastic bushings (the old ones had plastic bushings) with solid metal bushings (not bearings)...and the spring guide if it's flimsy plastic. Hold off on all the other upgrades until you've got a good handle on compression and shimming.

After you've done those two things....you'll have a solid understanding of what makes that particular AEG tick, what it's good and bad points are and where you want to take it from there.

THEN...I'd recommend you get a mid-level nice AEG and give it a once over. You'll be able to easily ID what make one so much nicer than the other.

That's a very good idea Tys, I've got a friend who's have a hard time with a P90 (it's got all the signs of a messed up upgrade from what I can tell) maybe I'll see if I can watch over his shoulder as he takes it apart to fix his gears.

The theory behind shimming (there's some good write ups on the site already) is the same, and in essence the components are the same...but the P90 is very different from your Kraken.

It's worth watching...but I'm not sure how much a first timer would take away from it.
