Stripping Paint off an ACOG

I'm looking to strip the paint off my RS ACOG. I've done some reading about removing spray paint such as using easy off or bake fluid, however, I'm not sure if these products will damage any seals around the optic.

are you thinking of dunking it? i wouldnt recommend it

Alcohol swabs.

All the Trijicon seals are inside the enclosure which is so well locked down that marines can't even break them open, so don't worry about messing anything up.

Watch the alcohol swabs around the glass however. I recommend covering the lenses with ducktape otherwise you risk removing the AR coating.

Thanks for the advice.
Do you mean just use alcohol and swabs to remove the paint, or swabs and some other paint remover?

I always try to use ELO first. It is safe for plastics and won't dry out the rubber seals like alcohol will.

Goo Gone or paint thinner in a spray bottle. Tape the cracks and lens as if you were painting it.

Goo Gone works AMAZINGLY well on spray paint.

Smells good too.

Alcohol swabs, as in swabs with alcohol in them. Or use a rag with rubbing alcohol. Just stay clear of the glass.

I purchased an ACOG offline and it was an ugly bronze/tan color that didn't really look right on my AR 15, so I decided to strip the paint off, tried a few methods such as alcohol and goo gone, it worked a little but I realized I was going to be sitting there for 3 days getting that paint off. So i pulled out my dremel and started stripping the paint off using a sanding bit. Got it down to just the bare metal pretty much polished it up and going to prime it before repainting it.http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/...al_popup_4.jpg

you could have simply painted over the color.. now it's gonna be weirdly shapped

Actually I finished it a few hours ago and I think it looks great. Painting over it doesn't work well (have tried in the past with an older ACOG) It tends to chip easily no matter what paint you used.

Nice paint job. Not shiny but still smooth.

Curo January 29th, 2012 00:08

Yea the 'tan' acogs almost always have a wonky goldish bronzish colour.

Pinard February 9th, 2012 12:25

finish is better than I would have expected finally, great job!
