Mags don't line up with hopup.

This is my problem. I've been working on a scratch build of an AK. I have some RPK mags that I thought would work with the weapon but the feed hold in the top of the mags doesn't quite line up with the hopup in the mag well of the weapon. I can't adjust the positioning of the hopup at all. Specifically the hopup is a little too far forward of the feed hole on the mag. Here's a couple of photos of the weapon and the mag.

If you have any ideas just shoot me a PM or reply to this thread. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Well if you took a pic of the mag where it's supposed to be in the magwell, it would line up or nearly line up.

Have you tried using them? What happens?

Spring on the hop up unit to push it back a bit? Is it to far forward or back?

Bingo. On my M4 build I had a similar issue. Only resolved with outer barrel spacers.

Styrak: I, of course, tried to seat the mags in the mag well, and what happened is the mag wouldn't fully seat into the weapon. The hopup is slightly too far forward.

Bobby: There is no spring on the hopup to move it forward or back. Unfortunately, and I'll take another look to make sure, the hopup looks to be butted right up against the forward face of the mechbox.

I've spent a bit of time looking at other mags for the weapons but I can't really tell if the feed hole in any of them is in the right place versus my weapon.

Thanks for the help guys.

Cheers,
Rick

LCT 103 front end
Prometheus 6.03 455mm tightbore barrel
original G&G metal hopup unit
original G&G metal mechbox shell
Systema Full Tune Up kit
Systema motor (forget which one)
Element AK47 metal body

That's all the pertinent stuff I hope. If you require any other information please let me know.

Cheers,
Rick

This isn't helpful. I'm looking for a solution not a reconfirmation that I have a problem. I know that already bud. What exactly are you trying to say here?

Darklen August 22nd, 2011 23:31

That a poor quality body is causing your alignment issues. Short of replacing it or maybe re-machining it to actually fit properly, there's not much you can do.

You're using a poor quality body with a very high quality front end that is most likely using an adapter from VFC to TM style AK front ends.

So it's causing a fitment issue.

Another clear indication of alignment problem is where there is a miss screw at the front. You can see that the front end doesn't line up with the body at all. Listen to the suggestion that's been given as it's the best solution. Unless you're desperate, you'll need to do quite a bit of filing to the receiver or front end to move the assembly back. Where to file is hard to say without seeing it.

if the body is an issue it can be replaced, what would be a better alternative?

SuperCriollo August 23rd, 2011 11:02

Try to push back your hop up. Same thing happened to my galil, and the problem was solved that way :)

King Arms, G&P, or LCT if you can find it :)
