Review - GWS XM8 56k warning, big pics

Hey all

Just received my new XM8 AEG the other day, thought i'd write a quick review about it for anyone that is interested. First off i'd like to mention I picked up the OD model, as well as I bought it already put together so I don't know how easy or difficult the kit is to install. So i'll really just be quickly reviewing how it looks, feels, etc.

Looks: The finish is actually pretty decent, after some reviews i've read I heard it doens't look to nice. The XM8 design is sorta "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" style I think. Some people like, some people think it looks too sci-fi. On each side there is a big XM8 logo. On the left side it says "warning: refer to owners manual before use". On the right side it says "Cal 5.56mmx4.5 HK Defense, Sterling VA".

Feel: Well this is where some of the reviews are right. It does feel a bit plasticky, but not as bad as the cheap springer crap from Cyma or any other crap manufacturer. However the foregrip is rubber like texture, and is very comfortable to grip. The pistol grip is just plain straight grip, i'm sure a hogue grip would fit on there.

Craftsmanship, Durability: Well this is where this kit falls a bit. The scope is a dummy scope, with a crosshair painted on. I have heard that an optic from a G&P G36 carry handle will work, i'm trying to get my hands on one to try that out. Apparently GWS (the company that makes the kit) can install the optic, but for 150 USD, plus you have to ship it to them. Another problem I found, but not a big problem, is the front body pin is very loose and slides out a bit. I've wrapped a bit of electrical tape around it and it seems to stick just fine. As for stability, it doesn't feel like the sturdiest AEG but I think it'll survive if I baby it on the field and don't smash it on crap. I'm not sure what type of plastic is used but I don't think it's the high impact ABS that TM uses. There are two spots on the gun to attach a sling, but I don't know how sturdy they are so I don't want to risk putting stress on them. I'm gonna look at designing some sort of ghetto sling.

Here are some pics of this baby nicely laying on my teddy bear blankie...

how far does the stock extend out and is the stock wobbly feeling or nice n rigid
by the way, sweet weapon

Grim Fandango June 14th, 2005 23:36

I don't have my complete load out just yet. I got some cadpat bdus and a TT MAV on the way. I also ordered some pouches for the MAV in cadpat. I also have a few other pieces of kit on order, as well as a few custom parts for my sidearm. I still need to pick up some mini batts, as the battery I have now doesn't really fit to well. I also need to pick up some extra G36 locaps, if anybody has any that they want to sell let me know.

As for the stock it only extends about 3.5 inches. It actually feels pretty sturdy, a little wobble but not much.

what kind of internals does it have?

Grim Fandango June 15th, 2005 00:48

Not sure about the internals, I bought it all put together so i'm not sure if the mechbox is stock or upgraded yet. I havn't opened the mechbox yet either, nor do I have a chronograph to chrony it. I probably should get a chrony though and test it out before i take it to green giant 2.

only semi and auto?

but damn i liek this gun. Looks very origional :D

Kwokwai June 15th, 2005 10:01

Just wondering. Does the real XM8 only have safe/auto on the selector? No semi?

Grim Fandango June 15th, 2005 12:43

that's actually just the angle of the pic I think. It does go safe, semi, auto.

Thought I would update this with a bit more info. I got to field this gun at OP:Green Giant 2. Let's just say I wasn't too impressed. Gun was shooting around 315 FPS, not sure what upgrades the shop I bought it at put in it though. The dummy scope is actually completely useless. I thought I could maybe look through it and judge where to aim, however looking through it is like looking through beer goggles. This made aiming incredibly difficult. I sorta had to look around the scope to see where the BBs were going and aim like that. Accuracy was off. I'm not sure if this is because it's so damn hard to aim, or because the outer barrel was a tad bit loose. Other than that it wasn't too bad. The carry handle is sturdier than some other reviews say, I was able to carry it around no problem and didn't feel or see any sign of weakening. Also got quite a few looks at the game.

Still a nice looking AEG tho. Any accesories for it?

Don't think so. Any G36 mag will work, and the scope from the G&P G36 carry handle kit will work in it. Other than that I don't know of any accessories made for this kit, or any that will work with it. But with some creativity, imagination, a dremel tool and duct tape, anything is possible.
