Polycarb piston base baddly chippped

Me again (see post http://airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?p=1693316)

Playing in my gearbox in search of the culprit of my fps loss, I found that my piston has a chunk that broke off near the base of it, see photo:

The teeth are like a strip of metal that's embedded in the body of the piston, so things seems to hold pretty tight as it is anyways but I'm wondering:

Can I afford to keep it as it is? I'm tempted is it doesn't look THAT bad.
What could have caused this? The gear doesn't seem to have suffered from this in any ways

Thanks for your inputs

why couldn't you just include this with your other post?

get a new piston. they are cheap. that one looks like it is brittle and lead to more cracking chipping

MultipleParadox August 17th, 2012 21:02

I considered them two separate issues and didn't want to pollute the other thread. Might as well help someone else having similar, put separate issues as well, so I created a second.

I'll consider buying a new piston; any recommendation? When I bought that one I did some research and it seemed to have real good reviews, didn't think I would go wrong, so I'm kind of lost now

same gun. shouldn't really deserve a dedicated thread, especially when it is a no brainer to replace the piston

Styrak August 17th, 2012 22:13

Replace it, pistons are cheap.

MultipleParadox August 18th, 2012 10:19

Alright, no brainer to replace, I get it.
Like asked earlier, any recommendations as to what piston is worth it?
And the real question is "What could have caused this?" I'd rather fix the problem at the source so the next piston don't suffer the same fate...

Thanks

I tend to prefer the modify pistons.

That looks like a Storm Poly Piston w/ full steel teeth rack. Unless you are running a very high fps or high rpm setup I would wonder why it broke.

MultipleParadox August 18th, 2012 11:37

Exactly that piston; I realize I forgot to mention it in my first post, sorry about that
Gun is definitely not High FPS or ROF :/

Stealth August 18th, 2012 11:42

AoE not corrected.

I have that piston that I dug out of a parts bin, and it's fine doing 500fps.
