Puxing 777 radio
 

Hi, i have read the radio advice threads around, still have 1 question unaswered. Which frequency should i buy? I used to own a pux 777 and wish to get back 3 (fishing trip one per boat)

Compatibility with other airsofters is not necessary in that case, but i need to reach 1km ideally. Do i pick UHF or VHF in this case? At what frequencies also? On what frequencies we're the weather radio?

Unless you have your amateur radio license, stick with UHF. As for channels, you need to use FRS frequencies.

The frequencies are posted on ASC and can be easily googled.

As for the NOAA frequencies, you need to search for the channels that are available in your area. (But they are on VHF)


Edit: just checked because I was doubting myself. There are some weather uplinks on UHF but it really depends on your distance from the station. Some weather offices send UHF uplinks to their VHF repeaters so if in close enough proximity, you can hear the broadcasts.

Option: get a dual band radio

Yes you just made me remember i had dual band in the past, after some research on ebay and radio888 they don't seem to have them. As for frequencies i still got a saved thread on ottawavalleyairsoft.com that deals with radio programming.

Got a shop to suggest me dual brand? Even the retailer here (tech seller?) does not have them in option.

Edit: when i type about frequencies, i am meaning frequency ranges and not channels. There are several px777 uhf which have different frequency ranges, it get's confusing.

VHF = 136-174MHz

UHF = 400-470MHz

FRS falls in the UHF 462.5625 - 462.7125 MHz and 467.5625 - 467.7125 MHz range.

You should only be using FRS/GMRS frequencies which have a corresponding channel number/names (and subtones)

Here's the approved channels/frequencies in Canada for FRS. (you can go look up the GMRS ones)

Alright for some reason i could not find any 777's with dual band, i went ahead and got PX-888K, so it should do the job

to the best of my knowledge, the 777's don't come dual band. either or but not both.

I use the UHF 777 as a light weight on-the-go or backup radio. Drop it in a mag pouch, clip it on my belt and go. Or, it's the loaner I make available to friends.

The Wouxun KG-UVD1P is my main radio that goes in my rig with an extended antenna.

how easy it that radio to program? Can it be done in the field or only pre programmed via cable/comuter?

I programmed the 777 at work, officially it was between phone calls but that's between you and me. No cable. Just did it by hand with a small frequency chart I keep handy.

The wouxun takes a little more effort but fairly easy as long as you don't go nuts with subtones. I actually don't bother programming subtones since I don't use them in games anyway. I sync to my laptop with the cable. Quick and painless once I built my base file. Any changes to the programming on the field, whether correct or not, gets wiped and a fresh base program installed.

It just crossed my mind, are dual band radios regulated? Usage wise and import wise?
For sure i won't be transmitting with it downtown only in the neck of the woods, just wondering anyways.

Usage wise, as long as you are using only the approved frequencies, regardless of where you are, you'll be fine. To put it bluntly, don't use the frequencies not allocated to FRS/GMRS downtown or up on your neck of the woods. I won't go I to more details unless you absolutely need it spelled out.

Import wise, a lot of have gotten our radio's from HK without issue.

Marty, me and a buddy were talking with two 777's in the city (with all the interference and buildings between us) at over 5 miles. Out in the country would be much more.

Berkut, the 777 is very simple to program by hand. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Thanks guys. I was asking about Woxung set. I like dual band function, so the radio can be used fir a variety of tasks.

The lake to be used in said fishing trip is 8km from one end to the other, so i am pretty sure we will be covered good enough. No interference, no montains, no trees between us. But i sure hope there will be lot's of fish in and between the boats, that's interference that i don't mind.

You'll be fine with UHF. Program the nearest 2 or 3 weather channels and you should be good to go.

On a side note, back in the day before all the RF noise everywhere, I use to get over 20km from downtown Toronto to Scarborough on VHF with base stations and modified car top antennas. :)
