I am just curious if anyone has experience with this radio, preferably in programming this radio. Got mine in the mail a couple weeks back and I need to stop being a lazy bitch and get this thing set up so I can stop using gay Cobras. Any help would be appreciated. I have little to no experience with radios, especially a dual band, so I'm rather clueless as to where to start.

I don't unfortunately. I guess I figured the thing would come with some manual programming instructions, and I was sadly mistaken.

Yeah I've watched this already. I want to program my channels to the same frequency as the "standard channels". I doubt any of the set channels on it right now are set to those frequencies. I also have no idea what those frequencies are. Radio noob, its painful I know.

The problem I've found with using one of these radios with FRS/GMRS radios is CTCSS tones ("subchannels"). I have the FRS/GMRS frequencies programmed but to use a "subchannel" I have to know what the CTCSS tone is by frequency and I can't modify values on a programmed entry without deleting the entry and starting again or just setting frequencies (frequency mode rather than channel mode).

At least, I haven't found an easy way to do this. There isn't enough channel memory to store all permutations as unique entries either.

In fact, as much as I like this radio, I also have a Motorola version of the earbone headset I like so I can just use a Costco-special blister-pack Talkabout to simplify interoperability with the group I play with.

Yes, they are i.e. channels within channels.

Yeah, I normal use the Cobra just because its simple and easy for skirmishes. Had an cheap ear piece for it, but I think its kaput. I wanna get this thing going so I can run a ComTac or Bowman and have good clear reception.

Not exactly, it's a method of signalling within a channel. When you look at an FRS radio, you can set a channel, e.g. 12, and a "subchannel" or "privacy code", e.g. 4.

It just means that a) when you transmit the radio also sends a tone associated with the "privacy code" and b) your radio ignores transmissions that do not include the same tone frequency.

But, it's still the same radio frequency, so you can interfere with and get interference from other people on the channel using different CTCSS tone frequencies, even if you can't hear them.

Think of a room of people (the radio frequency or "channel"). Some have blue cards and some have red. When a person speaks they hold up their card. If you have the same color card, you listen to them, otherwise you don't. You don't speak when someone else is holding up your color. However, different color card holders can speak over each other, even if they can't "hear" each other, because they are still in the same room ("channel").

Of course, these CTCSS tones are filtered by the radios, so we don't hear them in the transmissions.

Usually if you set the code or subchannel to 0, you can hear all transmissions on the channel regardless of CTCSS tone (but not answer back since they will ignore you if they have a "privacy code" set).

So "privacy" is a misnomer.
