M14 lower front rail

I am looking for a rail that replaces the front lower swivel (M14 Socom).

The Factory First editions seems to be sold out.

Would there be other options other than drilling my own?

You can order one made for the real M14. It will fit quite easy.

Or you can drill your own.

In order to mount a Magpul AFG to my M14 Socom16, i just took a section of accessory rail, and drilled it out, profiling the bottom to match the curve of the stock approaching the mag-well. A few files, a fine touch with a hand drill (or even better, a drill press), and an evening spent doing it.. Bob's your uncle.

Same principle applies, just simply butting the rail section forward of the stock sling mount, profiling the bottom of the rail section to clear/overlap the existing sling mount bracket.. drill and fit with longer screws - done.

Thanks.

Do you happen to have a few close up pictures of the rail and a finished product?

oh a side note, which brand M14 do you currently own?

Better still, I will bring it to Hill437 this Saturday, so you can examine the rail section on the gun, and how it's contoured to the body. No fancy tools required, An accessory rail section, a couple of rasp-files, a drill press, and patience in front of the TV for an evening of filing and contouring.

I picked up on the rail tip off of the interwebs.. not the first to do this.

It's just a tarted up CYMA Socom16 .. I haven't gamed it in a long time - it's a wall-hanger.

Rail segment is aftermarket sourced (unknown source at this time, memory fails me). Rail is 'dished' down the center with a semi-round brad file to better conform to contour of stock, and trailing edge tip is mildly contoured to meet stock rise at magazine well.

you can buy aluminum rail blanks of ebay, pre powdercoated, reasonably cheap.

Alternatively, with so many polymer rail handguards out there now, you can get a polymer rail bits from any one of those handguards (maaaaahgpuuuull MOE) and have a bit of an easier time filing.

Very nice setup.

How did you secure the rail onto the stock? Looks like you have to open the gun up and secure it from within using nuts?

HackD July 17th, 2014 10:08

Correct. Stock needs to be drilled and rail installed while stock is empty. Two allen head bolts, cut flush with nuts inside to prevent interference fit issues.

Great stuff. Time to shop for the bits and pieces!

PS: What do you recommend for inner barrel and hop-up?
