whoever runs cameras, how do you protect your lens?

I have a contour HD, and I can mount it on my hat or goggles to capture gameplay. However, I heard a bunch of stories where people get their lens shot out, same with red dots, scopes. I usually use it for biking ever since some dumb ass truck driver drove into my bike lane and I got injured for a month. I didn't get his plate number so I bought a camera if anything like that happen again it would be tape..okay getting off topic here.

How do you guys protect your lens? For me they do sell a protector lens..but that price is just dumb for 2 pieces of plastic..$60bucks..that's like the price of a lens replacement.

When i'm playing a game, every shot that hit me close or far barely ever really hurt, or even hardly have a pinch..Only once in a while I get a hurtful hot gun on the field. Like last thusday night someone had a hot one at panther. So I'm not sure how much impact it would be if it does gets to the lens. It seems there is no bang bang rule here which is GREAT, leave that crap out..At the same time it might be a bit dangerous for a camera..I tend to be very unlucky at times.

During my games I do get shot in the head a couple of times, so I figure the chances of a BB hitting my lens is not all that low...

Wore my contour Gps and contour +2 "naked" on my helmet all the time, never got shot, but of course it can happen

That said, I'd say dont worry too much about it; contour made these camera so that you can change (and buy) the lens cover relatively easily and for cheap if anything happens

oh..so that means the camera itself already has a protective cover installed....

Exactly ;)

You can probably find an after market scope lense to fit over it, or get a piece of lexan cut for it.

I'd go with a piece of lexan, that's what I've done for my scopes that don't have kill flashes that fit.

Home Depot carries sheets of lexan, the 11" x 14" is only $13. If you have a hole saw that's the size of the contour then that's perfect. If not then I use a dremel to shape mine. I cut to rough shape them use a grinding bit to fine shape it. Then I just use electrical tape to attach to the front. Works perfect and lexan is perfectly clear, can't even tell it's there. Plus with this sheet you get a whole bunch of them!

Rage Cams make several lens protectors for contours just do a search on ebay

Its not the protective lens you have to worry about. A hard hit on the front protective lens, the actual lens behind it will get damaged when pieces of it fly into it.

Buy one ready made or DIY your own.

Metal cutting scissors do the trick. Not messy, can easily do any shape.

I tested polycarbonate, it shatters like glass. Lexan same thickness holds point blank shot.

SuperHog October 25th, 2014 10:48

The lens protector on the Contour protects it from dust and water, but not a bb hit. Mine took a direct hit and it did crack.

Use any external shield as a secondary protection, either ready made or DIY yourself.

That's pretty interesting as Lexan is just a private trade name for polycarbonate. Are you thinking plexiglass instead of polycarbonate?

Lexan = polycarbonate

like

Tylenol = Acetaminophen
