G&G L85

Interesting alternative to the STAR.

No alternative at all, if you're a purist:

-Wrong colour trigger
-Wrong colour receiver pins
-Crappy trades
-Wrong colour gas parts
-Wrong mag catch
-Wrong colour mag catch
-Consumable Blowback
-Damagable gears
-Unique gearbox internals
-Custom Battery
-Bad finish

I mean, the STAR *which I own* has a few unique parts and a weird battery, but the only production problem seems to be the motors. This version, on the other hand, broke the blowback bolt and shredded the gears (proprietary, not standard version 2/3, so good luck finding parts in stock) within 1000 rounds. It also has a proprietary tappet plate and cylinder head.

I dunno about the specs, either. 80 m/s with .2's? 8.4 volt 18,000 ah battery?

At least there's some movies.

Hmm. The 80m/s is probably wrong, G&G says the same about their RK-104 and 103 series which consistently chrono over 315 and even as high as 350.

The concept is somewhat new, I know it's been done before but still, I expect there will be bugs to start with. Might end up like TM's SIG series, failed idea but interesting. Although I like G&G, I wouldn't go out on a limb and get such an untried product.

About the gears and the broken bolt, in my experience and those of others I know, G&G themselves have replaced any broken part. I fell on my gun hard jumping across a creek, broke the tangs at the back of the reciever. G&G sent me a new reciever, even offered to install it if I would ship them the gun.

18 KAh, eh? Battery technology sure has progressed. Guess my 4200 mAh is now obsolete...

how do they make the bolt blow back. sorry to get off topic but iv been thinking this would be a cool mod to try on my m4, if its possible.

How exacly would you do that? What would go back?

The thing is, the cocking handle doesn't go back and the little bolt cover is kind of pressure fitted.

Google the 'Sig' mod or 'AK' mod for it, that should show you about how it's done.

Actually, the dust cover (on both the STAR and, apparently from the pics I've seen, the G&G) has small external grooves on the reciever that it slides in/out of. Once you yank back on the charging handle, the cover pushes back and flips open and has to be closed manually, otherwise it stays open. Much different than an M4, although it might be easier to mod to an old-style CA (or "CIASSIC ARMY") metal body, where the cocking handle is not attached to the dust cover.

I don't know about that.

With US picking up a lot of airsoft sales, it's hard to design products specially directed toward the UK crowd unless Americans decides they want L85 or L86. CA and TM will probably keep gearing toward pleasing the Americans more than anyone else.

Marui, in particular, don't give a crap about anyone outside of Japan. Their guns were never designed for export.....they're meant for what the Japanese aoirsofters want.

CA? Who knows. They at least seem a little more willing to listen to gaijin.

Huh? I paid less for a full-metal STAR L85 than the going rate for a CA M4 CQB......

stokes August 25th, 2006 20:18

The Piston may be the agent that cycles the bolt mechanism. Just a guess, since thats the only thing the strikes back when the trigger is pulled.

Well, looks like it's finally out, and as predicted about $200 (HK price) cheaper than the STAR. Skruface brings up good points about (against) it, but for someone "just wanting an L85" and willing to put up with discrepencies and A1 stylings (I mean, people DO play with AK Spetz and G3SAS, and those are totally fictional), it is an alternative to Star's [IMO] ludicrously expensive L85.

I'm not sure who sold you that, but they were doing you a favour. Even if you could order direct from WGC with no brokerage risk or charge, the STAR would set you back around 750 before taxes... Given the risks of importing those items, that is not a market-sustainable price.

Realistically the STAR would be closer to $1000 here.

After liking the look of the G&G UMP, we tried another G&G rifle, the GR16. Sparing the details, I don't think we will order G&G again until they can actually get their act together as a manufacturer.

Skruface September 1st, 2006 19:56

Well, it's gotta be better than the Academy.

And yeah, Miles, I got it on Grim's STAR pre-order. $670 + shipping, whereas the CA M15A4 CQB was retailing for $700 at the time. Another great reason to keep a cash float on hand for "must-buy airsoft emergencies".
