RAS/RIS info
 

hello everyone

I'm just confused about RAS/RIS and couldnt find anything in any threads. What do they actually stand for and whats the difference between the two? Is if Rail Attachment System and Rail Interface System? I have no idea.

Another thing is how hard is it to attach a rail system onto, say, a CA M15 carbine? Which do you choose, the RIS or RAS?

RAS rails are generally free floating. They do not mount to the barrel at the far end. In real steel, this means that flexing the RAS by hauling on a vert grip or resting on a bipod does not affect the barrel. Essentially you can handle the gun without deflecting the barrel and affecting impact point. The barrel is also allowed to flex freely while firing.

RIS rails attach at the rear to the rec'r and at the front to the barrel. In airsoft, this means that the far end of the barrel is supported by the RIS. I'd say that this is a better setup for airsoft with it's generally flaccid construction (relative to real steel). We also have no barrel whip issues when firing low energy projectiles.

CA M15 rec'r threading is not standard with the TM threading. You can only mount CA RIS/RAS setups to CA guns. This also means that CA RIS/RAS mountings for the M15 are not cross compatible with TM or TM clones.

Last fall I mounted 2 Metal Tech real steel RAS units to CA metal bodies (aftermarket) with no issues at all. The nut threaded on like it a dream. I wasn't aware that the new CA guns were different than the aftermarket bodies. The RAS units also fit G&G, Marui and G&P guns (a little removal of excess paint in the threads for G&P).

Swat13 has one of those guns now.

My KA M.R.E. fits my CA M15A4 perfectly.
