Poor man's chronograph? how is it done again?

My guarder replica chronie just took a dump and im trying to do an FPS guess here.

There was a web page showing how u can estimate the FPS with a pop can, if anyone can remember that let me know!

It's on Redwolf but it's not accurate for North American pop cans.

What can it do to a can? Then we can estimate.

ok i just finished drinking a Holsten (german) beer can, and it goes through 1 entire can, i fired at the bottom, it dents it pretty good

If you have a mic and some space I suggest this technique:

It's been pretty accurate for me.

Somewhere between 320 and 360-370 FPS.

Any higher and it would go through the bottom.

Any lower and it wouldn't go through both sides.

how close should i be when firing into the cans?

1-2 inches, with the can NOT braced against anything

Thats for average FPS speed (over X distance), not muzzle speed.

To make this work you would need to minimize the distance between the muzzle of the gun and the can... but i would think you would need a pretty good mic/software then... hmm gonna give this a try this week.

ok, so whats the FPS if i can go through both sides of a North American pop can at 5 meters

joker060 May 25th, 2008 23:36

I wonder if someone with a chrony could do this for our cans......

Kingsix May 26th, 2008 09:06

How about a ballistic pendulum they use to determine muzzle velocity with them before chronographs were invented.

kalnaren May 26th, 2008 09:16

How about people just use a fricken chronograph.

None. All popcan chrono stats are for 1-2 inches distance.
