Cutting a spring

Hey there,
I recently bought a JG G36, but its a little hot for me, I am going to order a new spring for airsoftparts.ca, but a thought occurs, I heard that you can cut coils of a spring to reduce its FPS...
Does anyone have any info on this?
how many FPS/coil removed?
I'm still going to order my new spring, but I might try this with my stock spring anyways...

sorry, not sure if this should have been in doctors corner, feel free to move it mods...

Yes you can cut coils on a spring to reduce your FPS. It's a trial and error thing though since each spring is made differently you can't really say you'll get x FPS/coil.

I'd keep your stock spring in case you ever want to upgrade it back up. You've got a new spring on the way anyways and it's useful to have spare parts around.

Technically? Yes.

But why compromise your gearbox over a $20 part?

theguy July 18th, 2008 14:37

I'm not compromising it, I'm ordering a better spring...

So you would do what, cut the spring and expect it to lower FPS while it's sitting on your bookshelf?

I realise you're buying a new part, but my responce was one of using the cut spring.

I guess this is like springs to lower your ride...

You can cut your spring but It can go wrong...

Or you can go the safest way and order a new set of springs.

thank you Pacheko, if you read my whole post, i am ordering a new sping, but i am wondering what i can do with my stock JG spring, I am ok if it gets wrecked in the process, mostly I'm just curious...

Syn July 18th, 2008 14:45

But how are you going to get the end to sit flush like on new springs?

Also what spring and what fps are you trying to achieve ? 350?

PaCHeKo! July 18th, 2008 14:46

I read the whole post but I wanted to write down my feelings about this ;)

This is what I'm trying to warn you about:

Cutting the spring doesn't just pose the threat of wrecking your spring, it could trash the piston, gears, piston head, cylinder, and tappet plate.

Any number of factors could cause the piston to wobble while firing, putting unnecessary stress on the other parts in contact with it.

well I am using a sotck JG now, Havn't chronoed it, but apperently its around about 370...
Yeah around about 350 would be nice, looking at airsoft parts.ca something like 100 or maybe a 110 spring...

i see shelled....thanks, maybe i shouln't try this :P

100 would be your safer bet. A 110 put my M4 at 380 with a Silent head (lowers fps a little).

theguy July 18th, 2008 14:57

shit...would a 90 be too low? airsoftparts.ca says 300 for a modify 90...
But I have heard its more like 315...

I got the 110 spring, I don't think it shoots under 350 fps on my jg g36c, even after I shaved a few teeth off the piston, but that could be due to tight bore i added, so I'm not sure. I think you could just add the washer and bearings to the spring guide to stop the cut end on the spring from gripping into the spring guide causing spring torque.

Also they sell the irregular springs but I have not idea of any adverse effects of cutting coils from one end versus the other with the tighter coils. That is something to consider.

Also new springs work in over a few weeks/months and the FPS gets lower.
