It depends on the strength of the laser. At certain frequencies (Mostly really high or really low), they become illegal because they're dangerous. Normal red light lasers shouldn't be a problem...

For sure it would make it quieter. Stuff that doesn't move doesn't make much sound! It might work if you could somehow make something to keep it from touching the mechbox, but that's a lot of work...

Yes, I knew I could put tape there but I was thinking to hit two birds with one stone and make it more durable. Also because metal parts just look and feel more awesome in most cases.
