See if he would let a local gun smith would take a look at it, that would be your best bet.
If you have a chrony (poor man chrony would work too here) to use/borrow, you can see if it shoots the appropriate fps, and aren't any major air leaks.
Put lots of round through it, change mags, make sure it doesn't double feed, or misfeed.
