I know nothing of scope mounting, just wondering if you'd need to buy some external thing, or if there's already a small rail or something that I can't see on it.

There are a number of rigs which can accept magazine pouches on the back... but it all depends on how flexible you are...

If you want a "rearward" setup, try a belt rig with most of the gear behind your hips.
