There's no overkill for simple batteries such as nimh and nicad. The only overkill batteries would be using lipos 11.1V (which discharges way too much current and power for the motor for the gearbox to support....such as spinning so fast the gears)

So basically, i would go with the 9.6V battery, especially for an Mp5. Your rate of fire will be pretty good.
