For me, the mission drives the gear. That rules out using plates and plate carriers when playing in a wooded/grassy environment which I'm assuming you play in. You'll thank me once summer comes around.
You can still use chest rigs in that environment, however. Combining chest rig and hydro pack is commonplace.
This is strictly personal preference.
