3-9x40mm is the best bang for your buck.
I usually shoot at 3x. 9x is more for IDing targets and long range observation.
Stay away from cheap brands and replicas. Image quality will suffer greatly.
I've always been happy with Bushnell hunting scopes. For abour 100$ you get a very good scope.
And for the record, I hate Tasco. Their similar scopes in that range are worth shit. I tried to game one, and I ended up ditching the rifle in the car, as the whole thing was useless. Poor field of view, poor image quality, poor light gathering.
