a 9.6V non LiPo battery is on the upper end of the normal 8.4V.
So assuming what you have read is true, you will receive the same amount of wear as you would with a 9.6V, which is more then normal.

Depending on the internals, LiPos can be dangerous to a lower end mechbox, but a properly upgraded mechbox, or a good quality stock mechbox can stand up to higher ROF no problem. I have been running a 9.6V on my stock TM V2 for a VERY long time with no issues.
