I tried JB weld, it worked for 8 mags worth of shooting, then it broke. I don't know if it was the result of me doing the job poorly, I ended up buying a new slide out of frustration (couldn't buy the spring recoil guide plug itself). The plug came with it alongside a very nice looking slide.
Slide was ~$50
