As a reservist in the Army, I know that I was never taught to specifically use the bolt catch to aid reloads. I had to figure it out myself from playing Modern warfare and watching speed reloading vids on youtube. I show this "trick" to many soldiers and they too are surprised how much easier it is than using the charging handle. I cringe every time I see someone on the range fumble with the charging handle during a reload.
