It's not that people are telling you what to do, there's just a lot of 'been there done that' going on. When a hobby is as involved and potentially expensive as this one it can be discouraging as a new guy to get in knee deep and realize that you need to turn around and start over.
There is, however, a wealth of information on these forums that can help you avoid a great deal of that trial and error.
I'm a bit jealous that you're in BC; the terrain is a little more varied out there than Manitoba.
