The main problem, that I found, is when you use too much, or just enough silicone based sealants they degrade and end up everywhere in your GBB, like the nozzle. I was using GE Silicone II 100% silicone and I found that for some time after install I was cleaning the inner barrel and the nozzle contantly trying to clear the gunk that the silicone left. It does work, but there's more cleaning involved...
Blue gasket maker, I found to be the best for sealing magazine o-rings as they stop the leak and if you need to take them apart you can. It stays where it's applied and if you need to clean old gasket maker out, you have to use a utility knife or similar to get rid of it. IMO, blue gasket maker is the way to go to improve your seals.
