if you're looking to store pistols, you can also look at padded tool cases. My friend got one that was similar to this or the newer model to this:

It was only $35 and it had the cubed foam in it, so you could just pluck out the shapes and sizes that you want. The same foam typically found in those expensive pelican cases. Or if you found a case that didn't have foam, you can buy the eggshell foam from certain fabric stores.
