In excess it definately is.
Madmax has been doing some testing that shows a significant increase in impact at the cylender head when dry firing.
I cant seem to find where he was sayin it, it was in a random thread and sort of just came up i thought he said he was eventually going to post data when he finnished the testing.

In the meantime, do not dryfire your mechbox. I can show that dryfire imposes a peak impact force about 60% higher than when firing a 0.2g bb. The situation is even worse when you dryfire test your mechbox without a barrel. Even the barrel can produce a measureable reduction in piston impact.
