You can remove the front sight and take the rings off. Don't cut them off. You'll have to remove the sight to put on the new barrel nut anyway.

There should be two pins in the front sight, below the barrel: just tap those out with a punch. Make sure you push them out in the right direction if they're directional (if they're roll pins one side might be tapered, that side goes out last; or a solid pin might have ridges on one end, that end goes out first).

Check for screws and stuff too, under the front sight (usually under where the sling swivel is mounted)

That link didn't work.
I can't see any screws or pins in my front sight, so I don't know how to take it off. Here's a picture of my front sight:
