Problem Fixed.
After re-opening the gearbox to figure out what exactly is happening, I did solve the mystery.
Since the firing mechanism is completely electronic, I didn't realize that the gear pulling on the piston had a magnet embedded within the gear. This was the part that was causing the sensor to either fire once or continue firing. I was lucky enough to be able to re-use the old gear and just replace the stripped ones.
For anyone else out there with an Ares m4e. If you decide to upgrade your gears, make sure you get a magnetized "sector" gear
