sometimes a partially charged (ie. nearly dead) battery will do that. with nicad's you soemtimes have to charge them 2 or 3 times initially, then they are good to go. but like i said, if you have any doubt use a multi-meter. they are cheap and will tell you right away if you have a similar problem in the future.
