Up to you, it's a matter of looks. Remember that these are toys; toughness of any part is debatable.
For me, I've never found my full sized AK to be cumbersome. If you are going to use the gun with the stock extended anyway... why not have the advantage of a large battery?

Meh. Depends what you want the gun for. If he likes the look of the folding stock better, then more power to him. There are many reasons for liking a certain gun. Looks are one, practicality is one, build quality, battery size, etc. For me, I get the guns that I like in real life. A Glock may be a decent airsoft handgun, but you'll never see me with one, just because the real ones are horrible, horrible pieces of shit. Battery size is probably one of the last things on my list when I get a gun. I get what is good in real life, and I think that's a valid reason, just like someone who gets a gun for the looks.
