Most cells are made with thin peices of flat metal spot welded to the battery. It's simple enough to separate the cells, use strong needlenosed pliers to grab the metal, twist and it'll tear off. Then you just need to use a very hot soldering iron and a lot of solder to reconnect the wire. Once you've done a few, it's dirt easy.
