Here's my $0.02.

As a beginner to airsoft, you haven't really had a chance to play with either the long rifles or the short ones. So my suggestion is start with the short.
Why? Being short they're good for CQB and adequate for open fights.
If you do find that you want a longer rifle, the G36C is easily modified to the K length (you can find the G&P G36K kits on eBay). I did it, it's easy.

However the same could be said about starting long and going short. So it's really up to you and your preferences.
